Why in earth would you re-master the next generation series on Blu-ray and leave the aspect ratio 4:3.. what a total waste of time and money. Hello... all TV's are now least 16:9. What's the point you might as well buy the DVD's.. NUTS... NUTS... cannot understand this one
Because the show was shot for 4:3.. can't magically create a 16:9 show from a 4:3 show. Yes, the filmstock is 35mm but all the shots were composed for 4:3. As you say.. all the TVs are now at least 16:9.. but when the show was filmed, 16:9 TVs were unheard of. Think about it logically for a moment and you will realise how absurd your points are.
As for the "might as well buy the DVDs" point, the difference between these and the DVDs is that they've gone back to the original film stock and re-edited/re-mastered everything from the original film stock rather than the video cassettes they were stored and originally edited on. The VHS and DVD releases came directly from the inferior storage cassettes.. a copy of a copy. The Blu-ray on the other hand is a brand new edit of the original film stock.
Hopefully this will make it clearer what these releases are all about.
There's a special feature on the Blu-ray itself that covers this exact issue, and goes into a rather detailed explanation of WHY they kept the 4:3 aspect ratio. You can find it on YouTube too if you look for it.
