Amazon.co.uk Review
Deep Space Nine's fifth season was a turning point from which there was no going back. Character and information overload took over, and the complicated twists and turns in the build up to war either hooked viewers securely, or sent them away with a headache. The Klingon faction instigated by Worf's arrival was occasionally played for laughs, but mostly their hardheaded personalities made all efforts at diplomacy moot. In the opening episode a chilling possibility is proposed as to what might be: have the Changelings infiltrated already and replaced key personnel? Some fans saw this as a flawed X-Files-style development. Nevertheless it sowed a seed of insidious suspicion, affecting all the principal casts' relationships with one another, even allowing Odo and Quark an opportunity to confess a degree of friendship. Expanding on the new theme of duplication, the crew also made numerous trips to their mirror-universe counterparts.

As well as new uniforms and the milestone 100th episode, Nana Visitor and Alexander Siddig got to comically disguise the arrival of their child during filming. More laughs came from the fan favourite "Trials and Tribble-ations," with CG allowing Sisko and crew to interact with Kirk and a cameo from Leonard Nimoy. Avery Brooks began taking a backseat, partly a result of the now-overcrowded cast. Although Sisko's destiny would be foreshadowed by his first vision and the introduction of the Pah-wraiths, the Captain was in an increasingly sulky mood. Brooks only directed one episode, allowing room for regulars LeVar Burton and Rene Auberjonois to do more behind the camera. Joining them were Alexander Siddig, Michael Dorn and even Andrew Robinson. Available space started to seem hardly deep enough. --Paul Tonks

Synopsis
In this fifth instalment of the Star Trek spin-off, Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks), commander of the starship Deep Space Nine, discovers the first known stable wormhole--a virtual shortcut through space that leads from the Alpha Quadrant to the Gamma Quadrant on the other side of the galaxy. The Gamma Quadrant is governed by the Dominion, a group led by the Changelings--a group of shape shifters which counts DS9 crew member Odo (Rene Auberjonois) as one of its own. The Dominion has become a violent force in the galaxy, and the Deep Space Nine and its crew is the only hope of upholding the way of life established by the Federation. This collection includes all twenty-six episodes from the fifth series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Close to brilliance, 28 Jul 2007

Season 5 continues where season 4 left off with a few select members of DS9 undergoing surgery to infiltrate the klingon to empire in order to root out a dominion impostor. The 5th season borders on brilliance with fantastic episodes like the ship, the mid season 2 parter (in purgatory's shadow & in infernos light) before leading to a spectacular season finale which sets up for season 6.Along the way there's some great episodes like rapture when the stations biggest crook & security chief are marooned together on an isolated planet & the genuinely tense & chilling empok nor one of the best episodes of DS9. These are just a few of the great episodes in this a great season of drama & action at a great price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deep Space Nine, season 5, 7 Oct 2007
By Luke Shelton (Bury, Manchester) - See all my reviews
To begin with I was a fan of TNG, but I saw these boxsets, the new slimline editions, and I thought I must try a season of DS9, and I am extremely glad I did. I chose season 5, as thats what I started at on TNG, and there's no need to change routine!
Season 5 is of exceptionally good quality. Whilst I am still dubious about Avery Brooks' acting talent, the rest of the cast are very good and I have no problems here.
The episodes this season are simply amazing. On disc 1 you have some excellent episodes, one of my favourites being 'The Ship' which was my first introduction to a Vorta, (This is the first season I watched you see) and it was good.
Disc two has possibly one of the best episodes of DS9 in its entire run, Trials and Tribulations. I thought it was okay, but the forums praise this episode.
On disc 3 you have 'The Acent', which showcases Odo and Quark's relationship to a higher level, up a mountain. However the only episode I did not enjoy was on this disc; Rapture. I thought it was a bit sub-standard from what I had seen previously. But 'The Begotten' was amazing, definitely one of my favourites from this season.
Disc 4 contains a two-parter, 'In Purgatory's Shadow' and 'By Inferno's Light', where we are reintroduced to Martok and various really interesting things happen. I also enjoyed 'Doctor Bashir, I Presume?' as it showed that Alexander Siddig can act.
Disc 5 was a good disc, it had some good episodes but nothing too noteworthy, but saying this good Deep Space Nine episdoes are like excellent The Next Generation episodes. 'Business as Usual' was alright.
Now disc 6 had some amazing episodes on it. Soldiers of the Empire showed off the insides of a Klingon Bird Of Prey, and Children of Time had some harsh moral dilemmas, similarly to Blaze of Glory. And Empok Nor is an actually genuinely creepy episode, very well filmed.
Disc 7 begins the start of the mini-arc where Deep Space Nine is surrendered to the Dominion, with the first episode showing Jake's attempts to acquire a baseball card for his downhearted dad, and the second showing the surrender of Deep Space Nine, a very sad occasion.
The extra features are numerous and of good quality.

I suggest you snap this up fast; I'm off to buy season 6 as soon as possible!
