Product Description

The first line of defense for the Federation from dangerous aliens traveling through a nearby wormhole, the Star Trek Deep Space 9 Model Kit represents the namesake of the Star Trek TV series Deep Space 9. The 1:3300 scale space station kit returns to production injected in clear plastic that allows modelers the ability to light up their model. New window decals are also included to supply detail for those that desire a finished look without the need to light the model. As an additional bonus, the space station also includes a 1:2500 scale mini-kit of the USS Defiant, the battleship assigned to protect the station from Federation enemies! If you've got a Trekkie friend or family member, you know someone who would absolutely love this 16-inch in diameter Star Trek Deep Space 9 Model Kit. Skill level 2. Light kit not included. Glue and paint not included. Ages 10 and up.

Very accurate model, although I thought it was snap assembly but that's not a problem. Lack of paints disappointing but that's probably normal, this was my first model kit.

Bought this to supplement my non-clear version. 18 Sep 2013

I already owned the opaque fiber-optic version of the DS9 model. I bought this one to compare and to get my hands on the clear Defiant model. I try to light all my Star Trek models and this one seems like it should work out well (I haven't built it yet). I have worked on the Defiant model though and it is lacking some detail, but that is to be expected for a small 1/2500 model. I wish it had come with some decals for the defiant though. I'm going to have to try printing some of my own.

Not 1:2500 18 May 2013

The official diameter for Deep Space Nine is 1451.82 meters, which is approximately 57158.26772 inches, which is 22.863307088 inches when scaled down to 1:2500. If this were actually 1:2500 scale, the model would be at least 22, almost 23 inches in diameter. Instead it is the same scale model as is listed everywhere else as being 16 inches in diameter, which is closer to being 1:3300. Technically it would be at least 17 inches in diameter if it were 1:3300 scale, but 16 inches is close enough.

Why does this difference in scale matter? Because nearly every other Star Trek starship model is available in 1:2500 scale. Not 1:3300. There are even some in 1:1000, and 1:3200. But there are far more available in 1:2500 scale than any other size. Not to mention, 22 inches versus 16 inches is a massive scale difference. The 1:2500 model Enterprise D just does not look right next to a 1:3300 scale model of DS9.

Disappointing, but it's the only option right now. At least until models become available to print your own using 3D printers.

Very nice detail in clear plastic. I can't wait to build it and light it up. It appears that some of the issues with the original model have also been improved.
