Product Description

Review

'...Using a rich palette and flowing lines over starry, airbrushed backgrounds, Tavares places two delighted young explorers in brightly patterned garb soaring atop a celestial bear, flinging a planet like a Frisbee, waving wands or streamers and sailing over elegantly undulant landscapes...' --Kirkus Reviews

'This cheerful fantasy draws most of its energy from Brazilian artist Tavares' illustrations. They pair nearly scientific portaits of planets with two freckle-faced children who zip by them on paper airplanes, armchairs and hobby-horses...Most of Heine's text serves as a fantasy about space travel, but a multi-page afterward supplies facts about space, the solar system, planets and constellations...' --Publishers Weekly

'In bouncy rhythm, two young narrators-a boy and a girl featured in turn and sometimes together-visit several planets, constellations, and other heavenly bodies. Drawn in cartoon style and cunningly costumed for each venture, the children appear in vividly colored scenes that are rich in detail. In some settings, relevant mythological figures are sketched into the background. The set of brief poems is augmented with several pages of factual explanations of the solar system, the planets, and the sun, moon, and stars. These are particularly helpful since many of the concepts will be unfamiliar to younger children, and the combination offers a tool for introducing these topics...the bright tone of the poetry and the appealing, strong art are a happy combination.' --School Library Journal

Apart from the story in prose, there are desciptions of the planets and Solar systems at the end, together with a Solar system postem, so educational, as well as entertaining.

Imaginative, Beautiful Illustrations & Informative Non-Fiction Information 14 May 2013
By Barbarino - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
My children and I really enjoy this picture book, the art work is beautiful and the story is imaginative. My son who is eight liked that, Pluto, his favorite planet, was featured in the story.

He appreciated the way the author explained Pluto's history in the non-fiction portion at the end of the book. 'Pluto was once known as the smallest planet, but after much discussion has now been demoted to a dwarf planet because of its size.' For some reason he really feels Pluto has been slighted by the demotion and hates that its now called a dwarf planet (though he says it in an adorable eight year old way and it sounds like dorf planet). He liked the way the author laid out Pluto's history instead of just coming out and calling it a dwarf planet.

I liked the way the author paired the imaginative story with the informative non-fiction information and I learned something too; the name of our planet comes from the Hebrew word for ground and Saturn was named for the Roman god of agriculture.

My daughter who is eleven also enjoyed pointing out the details of the illustrations being Roman versus Greek and she noted that Mercury's wings should be on his feet. That gave me the opportunity to talk about artistic license.

I think this book would make a great gift for a child.

My toddler really likes this book. The pictures are beautiful and the text is very soothing and sweet. You can always check at your local library to see if they have it first. Preview it that way and if your kiddo loves it, then think about buying it for their personal library.

I thought the pictures were much cuter than the story, but am still very happy with my purchase.
