Book Description

Edited by Frank MacDonald 08-28-2013

It is the year 2044 on Earth. At the Farside observatory complex on the Moon, a startling astronomical discovery has been made. A survey for pulsars has found an x-ray source in a region of space where none has been detected before.

Upon further investigation, they find that this x-ray source is just outside of the Solar System. The astronomers are paralyzed by what they have found knowing what its disastrous ramifications might be.

A neutron star is approaching the Solar System. It appeared out of a small dust cloud that was shielding its approach. Armageddon has arrived; the star is on a trajectory that will take it through the center of the Solar System. Life on Earth will not survive its passing.

The only hope for survival will be on the massive Star One space station at the Earth-Moon Lagrange point or possibly in Tycho City deep beneath the Moon's surface. It will be a race against time to save a fraction of the Earth's frightened population.

A power struggle will erupt on Earth over who is to survive. On Star One and at Tycho City they prepare for the worst, unfortunately, the threat from Earth might be just as dangerous as the approaching neutron star.

Books in the Star One series.

Star One: Tycho City: Survival (Stand alone novel)
Star One: Neutron Star (Book One)
Star One: Dark Star (Book Two)

3.0 out of 5 stars A readable story let down by poor editing. 18 Aug. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
An interesting story that would have been far more readable had the author passed it on for editing before publishing. 0:800 is not how you write 8 o'clock in the morning; major words are often repeated in consecutive sentences, or worse within a single sentence; characters are quoted repeating almost the same lines in the same conversation; and the physics! An unpowered slingshot manoeuvre is a zero-G event. It's the same as freefall. No stress on anything and certainly not 6Gs worth! Finally, the extra half line of space between paragraphs need removing because the eye brings the reading voice to a shuddering halt when it sees a gap that big.

HOWEVER... If these things can be ignored, the story holds up, is entertaining to read, and reminded me of when, as an adolescent, I discovered the pulp-fiction written back in the 1930s and 1940s. The story has a charming innocence to it and in places was quite endeering. I hope if a second edition is ever published that the distractions can be removed, at which point it will be a most enjoyable book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quite a star (pun intended) 27 Sept. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
A little gem despite the science errors. Just foget the errors and enjoy the story. It`s silly and light weight but I found it exciting and entertaining, infact I read it in two days. Now for part two.

2.0 out of 5 stars Sadly, I am not twelve. 29 Nov. 2014
By Mike PP
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I had to stop reading this after a few tries at it. I found it irritating to read about the main character's powerful jaw, muscular physique etc. Too much of it. I found the writing style as if it had been written for twelve year old boys, not adults. There were entirely too many adjectives. I had the mental image of someone referring to a thesaurus continually to find an adjective meaning the same as the one used in a sentence, to use in the next sentence. The same thing was often said repeatedly in slightly different ways. This detracted from the pace of the book. I can't comment on the story itself as I didn't finish it. It may have been great but the writing was not.
