The distinctive tenor saxophonist Warne Marsh(1927-1987) was a disciple of the Lennie Tristano school and recorded this excellent album in Monster, Holland on August 14, 1982 with pianist Hank Jones(1918-2010), bassist George Mraz & drummer Mel Lewis.
Marsh's oblique and sinuous tenor playing is heard on 10 tracks(including 3 alternative takes) with 4 originals from the leader and one each from Hank Jones, Charlie Parker & Lennie Tristano.
Highlights include Parker's 'Moose The Mooche', Jones' 'Hank's Tune' & Tristano's 'Victory Ball'.
Anyone who considers Warne Marsh to be a dry and cerebral tenor saxophonist should be pleasantly surprised by the inventive and exhilarating jazz on this outstanding 64-minute CD.

Warne At His Most Sublime! 2 Mar. 2012
By rebd1908 - Published on
Format: Audio CD
I have over 2 dozen Warne Marsh CD's. Of all, I listen to this the most. Sometimes his approach can be too analytical for some, but in Star Highs, you not only have the amazing improvisational skills, but also an enjoyable album as well. His tone is a little deeper, and more expressive, if you can call it that. Just listen to Sometimes! What feeling! Without a doubt, the most amazing ballad he has ever made! And it sure doesn't hurt to have Hank Jones on piano. Listen to his solo on Sometimes! The variety of songs also helps produce an album I listen very often to. Can he even play the blues? One listen to Hank's Tune is enough proof. I wish this quartet could have produced more albums. Even the three alternate tracks are worth listening too.
