Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

14 years after Lylat Wars dashed into space to save the universe, get ready to live through the battle for the Lylat system once again as a re-worked offering for the Nintendo 3DS launches on 9th September. The game, which previously appeared on the Nintendo 64, now makes a return in Star Fox 64 3D.

With bold new 3D graphics, a faithfully restored script, fresh voiceovers, and a new multiplayer mode which uses the Nintendo 3DS camera to send you live video footage of your opponents reactions as you chase them around the skies, Star Fox 64 3D feels both comfortably familiar yet challengingly new.

Pitched in the middle of a battle for supremacy of the Lylat system, you take control of Fox McCloud's' signature Arwing starfighter and help pilot him through insurmountable odds as he battles to protect his home planet of Corneria and rid the entire Lylat system from the onslaught of the evil Andross. Teammates Peppy Hare, Falco Lombardi and Slippy Toad join the mission and help you to progress through levels, providing timely hints during battle about what to expect from the enemy.

With Fox McCloud heroically at the helm, Star Fox 64 3D allows you to use the in-built gyro sensor of the Nintendo 3DS to plot your way through battles more instinctively. You will also be able to choose the more conventional controls if that suits your style.

Boasting sumptuous graphics, which have been given a fresh makeover for Nintendo 3DS, playing in 3D allows you to better judge distances and avoid oncoming enemies, attacks and asteroids. Cut scenes are now more cinematic and the inclusion of 3D visuals will make for a more immersive experience.

If the battle for the Lylat system isn't enough for you, then take advantage of the multiplayer mode via the Download Play option. Play against up to three friends and take part in soaring dogfights above environments based on locations in the main single-player game. A range of game modes have been developed for the multiplayer option to increase competition amongst friends. In Survival mode players must fight each other and compete to be the last pilot remaining. Point Battle mode will see pilots receive a point for each rival they destroy and the first to a set total will be declared the winner. Time Battle mode pits you against the clock to take down your friends as many times as possible in the allotted time given.

Unique to Nintendo 3DS, you will be able to use the Nintendo 3DS camera to stream live video of your friends within the game - watch their faces react in real-time while you chase and shoot at them! Enjoy the moment when you take a friend out of the game and marvel at your own image when you top the leader board at the end of each multiplayer game.

In a first for Lylat Wars, the game has been localised into five languages - German, French, Spanish, Italian and English, meaning players who could not play the game previously in their native language can now enjoy the full experience on their Nintendo 3DS.

Star Fox 64 3D invites players to take on the role of legendary Fox McCloud as they lead a fearless squadron of fighters in fierce aerial combat to battle the evil forces of Andross and save the galaxy from destruction. The rich 3D visuals provide a remarkable sense of depth, distance and position as players dodge meteors and blast enemy fighters out of the sky.

A complete graphical update brings a Nintendo classic into the era of portable 3D fun. The game makes effective use of the Nintendo 3DS system’s dual screens: The top screen features 3D aerial combat, while the bottom screen displays characters and dialogue.

Features:

  • There are two control methods for the player to experience. The Nintendo 64 Mode offers original controls, while the new Nintendo 3DS Mode uses the motion controls of the built-in Gyro Sensor in the Nintendo 3DS system.
  • Trusted wingmen Peppy, Slippy and Falco are along for the ride – if one of them is chased or captured by an enemy, players must act to protect them in order to keep their team strong.
  • Each mission takes players through a different planet of the Lylat system as they blast enemies, collect powerups and fight powerful bosses on their way to the final battle.
  • A new multiplayer option lets up to four players engage in fierce aerial combat via a local wireless connection (using four systems and one game card via DS Download Play). The multiplayer mode also includes new power-ups and special weapons. Players can use the Nintendo 3DS system’s inner camera to display a live video feed of their faces as they battle, bringing a new level of fun and personalization to the multiplayer experience.

Fun:
The original N64 version was fantastic, and this remake really does it justice.

Good points:

- A very accessible game that is friendly to new players.
- Controls are VERY easy to master, and the training option is very thourough and well paced.
- Can also provide even veteran gamers with a good challenge.
- Lots to shoot at and blow up, and you can practically feel the impacts of your shots as the enemy craft shudder and break up on impact. So satisfying!
- Lots of hidden routes to take, and two main endings with a load of minor differences depending on how you played.
- The most challenging part of the game is getting the gold medals in every level on score attack - some levels took me a long time to smash.
- Submarine and tank missions are easy to master and don't break up the gameplay.
- The visuals are a beautiful improvement on the old old game, while still being true to the original.
- While all the voice casting has been redone, it again remains faithful to the original's wonderfully corny voicing.
- Great soundtrack with memorable tunes, yet again very loyal to the original.
- The 3D effect really does work very well!
- The gyro controls are surprisingly well done, though it isn't my thing. You may want to switch off 3D with gyro, though, as you'll be moving around and will often lose the 3D effect and smash up your arwing (that's the ship you fly).

Bad points
- Veterans may just love the nostalgia of this, but those wingmen of yours will still whine at you and still don't know how to just do a somersault!
- They've given the training guy a voice. But he creeps me out!!! Volume off... lol.
- The score attack for Katina on expert mode will have you tearing your hair out as ships crash into you, breaking off your wings and losing you your all-important twin lasers. Even your wingmen can smack into you and say "Get out of MY way!" Cheek.

Overall:

A fantasticly ation packed, yet lighthearted, game. Very well balanced and in my opinion one of the best games I've played.
It doesn't try to do to much, and what it does it does very well. The bad points are mere niggles compared to the overall greatness of this game.

Fun:
I remember playing starfox 64 when it first came out and I fell in love with it, and the same goes for this new 3DS version. Its just perfect! Very true to the original. The graphics are greatly improved and the 3D is just breath taking! It adds a whole new take on the game with its new gyro sensor controls(which can be tricky but fun to try and master!)
Sure the game isnt the longest but has very high replay value with different routes and multi player battle.
this will keep me going until Mario appears in November! Well done starfox on your glorious return!

Fun:
Starfox 64 3D is remake of a classic N64 title and comes well recommended if you are after an addictive score attack based shoot em up.

The visuals have been considerably improved over the original game, and now sport a much shinier and vibrant colour palette, greatly enhanced textures, lighting effects and vastly improved character models. The 3D depth fits this type of game very well as you are effectively flying 'into' the screen and helps when avoiding objects and judging distance. What's more impressive is that the frame rate doesn't take a hit with the 3D on full and is also perfectly solid with very little ghosting. All of the games levels have received significant care and attention in the graphics department, my favourites are Titania whose enriched textures give the level a Mars-like feel, and the Toxic chemical ocean planet Zoness with it's metallic, slimy waves and unrelenting rainfall.

The music has also been re-done, it doesn't sound orchestrated (I may be wrong) but is a welcome enhancement of the originals' theme tunes. The cheesy dialogue has also been re-recorded, rendering Slippy Toad more annoying and the end of level boss ramblings cheesier than even before.

The controls translate well to the 3DS and there is also a gyro control option where you can tilt the system to move your ship. Unfortunately this is something of a gimmick as tilting the 3DS knocks the 3D effect out of the sweet spot, and this is a game you should play with the 3D cranked up.

Being a level by level, score attack based game, Starfox 64 is perfect for a handheld and if you haven't played the original you could easily believe that this wasn't a remake but designed for the 3DS in the first place. The controls are intuitive and fluid, the difficulty level well judged for newcomers and offers significant replay value for those shoot em up fans who wish to collect the three medals for each level (a serious challenge). There is also the original local multiplayer mode which is good fun (minus tanks and on-foot) although it's a bit of a shame that you can't play online. A download to fix this in the future? - here's hoping.

Finally, what's most impressive is how well the gameplay holds up after 14 years, which in my mind indicates how Starfox 64's experience has found very few peers in other rail shooters in all this time. Of course, if you aren't too hot on rail shooters, then you might want to try before you buy otherwise Starfox 64 3D is the best version of one of the best out there.
