You never know exactly what to expect when you grab a freebie from Amazon, frequently they are full of little to no proofing, barely held together by some kind of narrative.

That's not what you get from this. It's writer has either read Starship Troopers or The Forever War but probably both. I'm not saying they nicked a lot from both but they certainly were either heavily inspired or drew a lot of their ideas form those sources.

The plot and characters draw you in quickly and you'll be left at the end of the book thinking "Oh, wasn't there more? I was enjoying that!".

You will find by the point you are just getting into the book and comfortable with the pace it's over.
Luckily for you there is a 2nd in the series that is just as good, if not slightly better but I personally wish the writer had put both books 1 and 2 into just one volume.

I'm currently waiting for part 3. Hurry up! I need to read it.

Better than some are suggesting 16 May 2012

This series reminds me of some of Heinlein's youth SciFi such as "Starship Troopers." It's a good yarn, starting with the discovery of an alien artifact and alien remains in Antartica and following through with the technological and social change that result from this. This includes the selection and induction of a mentally and physically elite group of young adults into a training squad for .... what? Saving Earth, obviously, but at this stage, despite having read five books, I haven't got far enough into the series to have glimpsed a live alien which is what some of the reviewers are complaining about, I think. Plenty of action and strategy in their training carries the reader onwards, though, making each book an adventure. Quite well written.

It starts out interesting enough but just when you are ready to sit and read for a while it is gone. Three time longer for the price would have been much better.

Not enough there, there 13 May 2012

Star Force: Inception is a good idea. You find something at the South Pole, that shouldn't be there, and it leads down an interesting path.

However, it's only 1,184 locations long. That's it. I picked it up for free, but it looks like this is now $2.99. I see that the author wants to go the serial route, which is fine, but there is no way that this is worth $2.99. Considering how much is out there for free, I would suggest abandoning the serial idea, and put out a compilation, if the author wants $2.99.

Good idea, but too little value for the cost.

Edit - compare this to Empire (In Her Name: Redemption, Book 1) Empire is five times as long, introduces an amazing alien race, has amazing writing and is free. This is why price matters.
