Product Description

Product Description

The stunning first book in a major new fantasy quartet set in Iron Age Britain.

Book Description

A great and terrible evil threatens the druids' future. Their only hope is the Star Dancer: a child who will be born under an untimely comet and who is destined to protect them. As the fated star-shower lights up the sky, the druids are watching. They believe the prophesied boy has arrived. But down in the village, the midwife has just delivered a perfect little girl. Her name is Tegen – and she is the Star Dancer. Tegen is rejected by Witton, the Chief Druid – but when a visitor gives her a green silk shawl, she begins to work real magic. Near death, Witton acknowledges Tegen, forcing her to abandon her family and learn the spells and rituals of the white-robes. But there are those, close by, who secretly plot to destroy her and take power. In the great battle to overcome her enemy, Tegen is triumphant – but the cost is terrible. Now the Star Dancer must continue – alone – to fight against the evil that threatens her world . . .

5.0 out of 5 stars Strong storyline and lyrical writing, 13 Feb 2007

This review is from: Star Dancer (Hardcover)
This excellent book had me captivated from the first line:
'The stars danced all that night, but the midwife did not stop to watch.'

The story follows Tegen, a girl born to ordinary parents, who finds she is The Star Dancer of prophecy. The story line is strong - no spoilers here! - but it is the lyrical quality of the writing and the wonderful descriptions that left me wanting more. Looking forward to the sequel 'The Fire Dancers', due September 2007.

5.0 out of 5 stars A chance purchase, 30 Dec 2006
This review is from: Star Dancer (Hardcover)
This was a chance buy, a look at the cover and hope kind of decision made during a lengthy browse in a bookshop (oops, is that allowed in here?). To be fair, I wasn't expecting much but I was pleasantly surprised.
This is ... almost...ish... similar in a way to the Michelle Paver Wolf Brother series. Tegen is a very powerful lead character and the all-pervasive magic that surrounds the community is utterly engaging.
Beth Webb creates a convincing world that it is easy to slip into but difficult to pull yourself away from. I was struck by the 'womanliness' about the book, style and content, but will be really pushing it towards my boys at school, particularly as puberty knocks.
The plot is strong, each page taking you towards an increasingly uncertain conclusion to dilemma and counter-dilemma. The reader is often left hanging, knuckles white and exhausted from lack of sleep.
The only negative aspect - no sequel until Sept 2007!
