Book Description

15 Jun 2011
?The English painter Stanley Spencer (18911959) is perhaps best known for his mystical biblical scenes and candid self-portraits, but it was his magnificent paintings of gardens, houses and landscapes, set in the small alleys and overgrown backyards of his home village of Cookham, which proved more popular during his lifetime. Published to accompany an exhibition at the stately home of Compton Verney, this book is the first to focus specifically on Spencers landscape paintings, and to consider them as a group, rather than as punctuation marks between the figure paintings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth having! 26 Aug 2011
Format:Paperback
A fascinating book of paintings exhibited at Compton Verney; gardens and landscapes in delicious leafy detail.
It includes excellent biographies and colour prints of Spencer and his artist friends.

4.0 out of 5 stars Naturally Talented 13 Dec 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I saw this book at the Stanley Spencer Gallery in Cookham, and wanted to buy it as a surprise for a friend, but she was there at the time, so bought online.
This is a good study of the artist and his relationship with teh natural world, but I would have liked a few more pictures. However, having looked at many books, this was the best, at a managable price.

4.0 out of 5 stars good read 15 Nov 2012
By M.ATKIN
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Stanley Spencer, too much written about his 'other' paintings, refreshing change to read something about his landscapes. Pity i missed the exhibition it accompanied, but useful check list in rear.

Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
A beautiful book with excellent plates of paintings I have never seen before. As an amateur painter, this was quite an eyeopener.
