Review

"I don't think that writers or painters or filmmakers function because they have something they particularly want to say. They have something that they feel." (Stanley Kubrick)"

Product Description

This title presents the past, present, future: the world through kubrick's eyes. It features the incomparable career of a cinematic genius. One of the most esteemed filmmakers of all time, Stanley Kubrick (1928-1999) was also one of the most enigmatic. He broke into the film scene at the age of 26 with the ambitious, independently produced "Killer's Kiss" and within a few years was working with the likes of Kirk Douglas, Laurence Olivier, and Peter Sellers on seminal movies such as Lolita and Spartacus. Having gained the support of actors, producers, and movie studios with his early efforts, Kubrick garnered the creative control he needed to produce uncompromising masterpieces such as "2001: A Space Odyssey", "Clockwork Orange", and "Barry Lyndon". Polishing off 1999's "Eyes Wide Shut" just before his untimely death, Stanley Kubrick left behind a puzzling and positively brilliant body of work.

Great 11 Sep 2011
By Max Coombes - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
The writing is fantastic- the author writes in a way that encourages ways of viewing and appreciation Kubrick's films, rather than completely analysing them. There's also contextual information and quotes from Kubrick himself to make things more interesting and well-rounded.

The book features numerous stills from his films as well as photographs from behind the scenes, so you get to see things like Kubrick lying on his back while Alex holds a giant phallus statue above him and he films it smiling.

It's a great book, and for that price it's totally worth it.

Worth the money 6 May 2011

A hardback almost 200 page book on Kubrick for $10...how can you go wrong? I love the Taschen books and this is a great overview of Kubrick's work with many many color photos from his films. There are set photos as well as photos reproduced from the films. It is an overview and if you want a more in-depth examination I recommend either buying the other out of print Taschen book on Kubrick (comes with a film cel, and very expensive) or titles dealing with specific films (e.g. 2001). I love just looking at all the big color photos to be honest.

Cheap and Great 9 May 2012
By S Tuffnell - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I had to have this as it was so cheap and packed with amazing illustrations from the master film maker. It is in chronological order of films so begins with the black and white years, including Kubrick's photography sessions up to Dr Strangelove. Then it gets into the hot stuff with wonderful large colour 2001 photos, many of which I had not seen before. Then huge colour spreads from A Clockwork Orange, and Barry Lyndon.

It moves to a very well chosen series of snaps from The Shining, some rather creepy in their size such as the shot of the axe smashing through the door. Finally the book ends with Full Metal Jacket and Eyes Wide Shut stills.

The ending is a series of small poster art to show the various films in a list with info about each. It is an easy read overall, and can be read in one sitting, focussing more on the illustrations. A fantastic book on my favourite director worth picking up.
