However, Iris starts noticing a few odd things about Stanley and it slowly dawns on her that he can't read. When the boss figures this out, Stanley loses his job -- an especially troubling development, as Stanley has just had to put his father in a retirement home. Format:DVD
This is not your average "boy meets girl" film. The two main characters are not in the first flush of youth and have plenty of troubles in their lives. One's a widow who misses her husband desperately while the other is illiterate and lives with his elderly father. They both hold down uninspiring jobs at a large bakery factory.
I could say she teaches him to read and write and they all live happily ever after. But that would skip the journey through their own little hells they both have to make before they get to that happy spot.
In today's world of computer graphics, swearing and violence this is a wonderful oasis where the action centres on life and how we learn to get along with one another. Try it.

had this film for xmas and have watched it already.it is a great film with is what i think a suprising performance by robert de niro.the film is basically about a pair of co workers whose relationship develops after one teaches the other to read.a great film.

Typical American Story of this age
Nice film and well acted. If you want to put the lights down with a bottle of wine and forget your troubles
