The definitive work for Commonwealth and Empire to 1970 comes out for the 113th time! Though not always quite like this - issues only up to 1970 is an inconvenience for reasons, I guess, of practicality, but a good compromise to keep the size manageable and allow the space for all those excellent colour illustrations.
I was delighted to see significant increases in my own area, pre-war Papua, but the downside is that the gaps will be more expensive to fill. Recently listed varieties have increased the most - could this be due to being legitimised by a Gibbons listing? Papua doesn't even get a mention in the Preface, so those increases that are noted, and there are quite a few, must be quite large.
The format is familiar and there is a useful, in-depth article on the importance of condition in all its guises and how it affects price. This is a welcome addition with much detail and relevant illustrations. It is couched in Gibbons' usual conservative tones, e.g. "One might expect to pay a premium for a modern plate block."
The annual ritual of buying the new Gibbons is never cheap, but it always feels worth it to stay abreast of the market.
