Flagship catalogue - Highly recommended,
This review is from: Stanley Gibbons Great Britain Concise Stamp Catalogue 2011 (Paperback)
THE GB CATALOGUE, SG's Flagship production. Top quality product with amazing wealth of information and detail for less than £30. Such good value I buy a new one every year and pass on my old one. Indispensable for the general GB collector. The lay-flat format is a must for stamp catalogues and SG has continued with Listing Decimal Machin Definitives in their own section at the end of the QE II section first introduced last year which adds clarity to these issues not being interspersed in a vague chronological order with the rest as previously. It seems Security Machins now have their own section and perhaps this should be separate at the end of the Machin section, at present it is followed chronologically by the London 2010 Machin miniature sheet which seems out of it's place. There are a few errors in this section which I'm sure will be corrected, it does state that "U" numbers are temporary and subject to change in any case! A source index for the issues will be sorely needed by this time next year! All in all an excellent product. Comparing this to the woeful GB Specialised Decimal Definitives Volume 4 part 2 you wonder if the same company could possibly be responsible for both!

Another excellent edition which improves every year, there are 20 extra pages this year.It is becoming increasingly difficult to go directly to a section, perhaps a colour tabbing on each page could be added to go straight to a section when the pages are splayed. This edition is the first one to include the new Machins; all previous editions were a year behind on new Machin definitives issues. This edition also includes the new security codes and dates that are present in the iridescent overprint; this means that quite a few Machins have been renumbered, which is a good thing. There are a few mistakes and omissions which will probably be sorted out in the next edition. For example country stamp EN18c £1.10 has the wrong colour description. The new low value self adhesive stamps are not listed in the Self Adhesive Machin Index, neither are the new 2011 values but then again none of the security S/A Machins have been added either. The Machins within the 2010 Jeffrey Matthews sheet haven't been included in the Machin index either. The Machin indexes are important because they list the various sources for each stamp. There is reference to the `recorded signed' for stamps not having date codes but they have now appeared with MA10 on them. They have left very little room to add new stamp codes to the security S/A Machins meaning they will have to change them continually. The same can be said of their gummed Machin codes although there will be very few gummed issues released anymore, so they could have taken the opportunity to recode them once and for all. The values of the Smilers sheets continue to rise as the lack in interest of them increases. I won't go into other value increases as there are few, although lots of increases to the stamps with errors which seem to be the 'sort after' stamps on eBay these days. The commemorative section is as complete as ever. It would be nice to see an index page of minisheets (no pictures just a list). The Decimal Machin Pane guide needs to be either omitted or updated, as it is of little value in it's current state, pictures of the panes would be more useful. All in all well worth the money.

Over the last 25 years, this catalogue has been invaluable to me. As it says in its own introduction, it neatly bridges the gap between SG's Collect British Stamps checklist catalogue and the complexity and detail of the 5 volume specialised catalogues. The price has been held this year, which is welcome as it was steadily rising year on year. The listing of all Machin definitives at the back of the book was introduced with the 2010 edition and this has been maintained. I was unconvinced last year, but now I've got used to it, I think it works well. I think it would be useful to have colour coded page edges so that you can flick easily to a particular reign / section, but that would be a 'nice to have' rather than a necessity.
