5.0 out of 5 stars Funny and moving - a classic, 27 Mar 2003
We love this book - a picture book about football that lets the shy retiring boy be a huge hero. Told in rhyme, and amusing for adults to read it follows the story of dear self-effacing little Stanley and how he ends up saving his local team from defeat in the cup final - and then goes back to his dear old grans for tea without saying a word about his adventure. We all cry in our house when we read this - one of the true classic children's picture books along with Dogger. Thank goodness it is back in print - our local library's copy is worn out.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book to read to children, 10 Mar 2008
I love this book and the whole series of Stanley Bagshawe books. I read them to my son (who is now 22 and I'm looking forward to reading them all to my grandchildren, having bought a new set in readyness.
The stories are great, the rhymes are amusing and the illustrations just capture a byegone age of innocence perfectly.
Every parent and grandparent should get this book and the rest of the series so they too can read good stories that will make children laugh and enjoy reading and being read to.
