Halka stands in relation to Polish culture roughly where Der Freischuetz does to German culture, tuneful, patriotic and middlebrow. It contains two lively dances, one magnificent aria for each of the principals and a lot of attractive if undemanding music. This production is lavish with costumes and scenery, is beautifully sung and the recording is excellent. I would love to have seen it live, but this is a very good substitute.

The opera is amazing! Performed well by the singers and its an awesome story that gets you right at the beginning. It shows why Moniuszko and his operas should be performed more often.
