Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

It's flatly unfair that the Gossip aren't a massive success, a rocknroll giant slayer, especially as they unleash another 10-song, 30-minute zinger like Standing in the Way of Control. Singer Beth Ditto's boundless, whether shouting out the title song's chorus or feather-dusting the lyric on Meg White-sounding album closer, "Dark Lines." The band rocks with an unerring simplicity, a leanness that writhes. The big-beat, hop-along (and sing-along) "Listen Up," is the centerpiece here, a stripped focus on the Gossip's core conviction, that rhythm can rock like little else. The tune has Ditto holding court over a bluntly simple one-two beat, cautioning a crowd that by rights ought to be tenfold larger: "now gather round/now listen up," warning them that "some people talk way too much." As Ditto stuns, drummer Hannah Blilie's beat pounds, and Brace Paine's guitar lays down a simple law. Ignorance of that law is no excuse. --Andrew Bartlett

CD Description

Third album by American punk-soul trio The Gossip. Combining uptight funk with punk rock aesthetics and lead singer Beth Ditto's ground-shakingly passionate vocals, this album is a real treat for fans of bands such at The Rapture and The White Stripes. Includes the singles 'Standing In The Way Of Control' and 'Listen Up'.

Firstly re Tenpennys review: Why Beth Ditto's sexuality or size is relevant or worthy of comment here I fail to grasp. Don't allow the homophobic/sizeist prejudices of this person to put you off what is a very raw and energetic album. Get tapping on Amazon and find out for yourselves!

Absolutely loving this album!Bought it after seeing them on the Jonathan Ross show and thought it would entertain me in the car on a journey home. Could have been a shopping mistake but most certainly was not. Some tracks are a little bit similar, but still its def worth a listen. 'Listen up' and "Standing in the way of control" are ace. They are all ace.

4.0 out of 5 stars Exciting, 15 Feb 2007
By Laura Armstrong (Norfolk, UK) - See all my reviews
I first heard 'The Gossip' on the Jonathan Ross TV show and was bowled over by the lead singers voice, what a voice! So an investment into the current album had to be made and it was money well spent.

The album boasts 10 track of pure rocky brilliance. On the track 'Listen Up' you truely do listen up, as Beth Ditto's commanding vocals capture everyone's attention. 'Standing in the Way of control' another highlight truely exploits the range of Ditto's voice as a previous reviewer said, very reminisant of Joplin and Plant (if that is possible). There are more soulful moment with 'Coal to Diamonds' and 'Holy Water' which help vary the tone and shows the versatility of the group.

A truely exciting album that demands repeat listens. Listen Up!
