• An astounding Eddie Hazel-dominated Funkadelic album, remastered for the first time in 15 years from the original mastertapes. This is probably the tightest and most accessible of Funkadelic’s Westbound albums, featuring track after track of incredible music.

• The CD includes the original seven track album plus the sharp-as-tacks edit of the title track, released as a single, and the wonderful guitar duel of ‘Vital Juices’, which was the B-side and continuation of ‘Red Hot Momma’.

• In-depth sleeve notes from funk expert and series consultant Dean Rudland, including details of the band’s history and the recording of this album.

• Full colour booklet, which reproduces the classic sleeve art by Pedro Bell, as well as contemporary memorabilia, ads and photos.

One of the best 13 Dec 2007
Format:Audio CD
"Standing on the Verge of Getting it on", is a very apt title. In 1974, when this album was released, the group were trimming down their style from the earlier sprawling rock/psychedelic sound. It's no surprise that this year also saw the re-emergence of Parliament who had a much tighter sound. Ironically the album also sees the welcome return of Eddie Hazel the man who came up with Maggot Brain. The albums sound then, while funky as hell, lies somewhere between the drawn out haze of the past and the more polished future.

"Red Hot Mama" is a reworking of a Parliament number to be found on the Invictus sessions, a funky romp to kick of the album. The thing about any Funkadelic album though, is that you really have to like the whole concept. There are large parts of the album that's just spoken word, occasionally with music beneath. RH Mama has a minute and a half opening before music. Personally I love it and the whole P-Funk mythology but it doesn't appeal to everyone!
"I'll Stay" is one of the most soulful songs the band ever did, not surprising given E. Hazel's return. "Sexy Ways" is like a return to earlier albums in its opening, but is much cleaner and bares the mark of the new style. "Standing on the Verge..." is very similar in that respect - a long vocal opening, rocky but very clean and sharp, making it the best track on the album, an absolute stormer. The last 2 songs (one a snappy song, the other a drawn out vocal with guitar backing) are reminiscent of past albums too.

So, a transitional album full of funky genius but on the verge of change.

In my opinion one of their better albums. There's a warmer, bassier groove to this one, and the whole production is really tight. It's got the same rock guitar feel throughout as their earlier albums, but to someone who is into more conventional black music of the early 70s, this production suits my taste better as the earlier stuff was often too cold, stark and rocky.

Buyer Beware... 9 Aug 2005
By Thaddeus L. Thompson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
First off, the remastering job is great on this (and all of the other Westbound Funkadelics), and the bonus tracks are a treat. However, Ace must have used alternate or just plain wrong master tapes. "I'll Stay" has about 3 minutes clipped out of the end (it fades at 4 min), while "Good Thoughts, Bad Thoughts" has the same amount clipped out of the beginning (most of the opening guitar solo is gone; George's speech now starts 3 min. in). On top of that, the "Sexy Ways" here is an alternate and inferior mix with different lead vocals and extra guitar noodling. Hopefully Ace will correct this and re-release it - and offer trade-ins for those of us who bought this shortened version.

New remastered version 29 Sep 2005
By Christopher B Thomas - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I bought this about a month ago along with every other reissue of Funkadelic and have been for the most part very pleased. After I read in a magazine that the record label had corrected all of the problems listed by the first reviewer, and reissued the reissue, I bought it hoping I would get the corrected version. After listening to it and comparing it to my original version, it is the corrected version. Although they didn't correct the back insert, which still has the shortened time length for "I'll Stay" and "Good Thoughts, Bad Thoughts". The sound on this and all of the reissues is splendid. The album contains two of my favorite Funkadelic songs in "Red Hot Mama" and "Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On". I am docking it one star for the Eddie Hazel overkill way too long song "Good Thoughts, Bad Thoughts" which I have a tendency to skip. Overall it is one of their most solid albums and has plenty of highlights for people to get their groove on.
Standing on greatness!! 9 Oct 2005

Funkadelic's "Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On" is not only a high point of their career but it's also one of the greatest guitar albums ever waxed. The band has finally perfected their groundbreaking fusion of soul music harmonies, hard funky grooves, off the wall weirdness & blistering guitar work. From hot funk/rockers like "Red Hot Mama", "Alice In My Fantasies" & the title track to the atmospheric "I'll Stay" & "Good Thoughts, Bad Thoughts" to the goofy "Jimmy's Got A Little Bit Of Bitch In Him", this is Funkadelic at it's best. To sweeten the deal, this reissue adds the rare single b-side, "Vital Juices" (actually, this should be called "Red Hot Mama" part two because it picks up where "Mama" fades out with more great guitar work), the single version of the title song, informative notes by Dean Rutland, and all the original artwork (along with rare photos of the group). Also, Westbound/Ace has corrected the mastering error that resulted in edited versions of some of the tracks on this reissue and now "Standing On The Verge" can be heard in all it's glory. So if you're a Funkadelic fan, a Hendrix fan, a Sly Stone fan, or if you just want to hear one of the greatest funk/rock LPs ever, this one's just waiting for you.
