Hinckley makes a compelling case for every one of these virtues, quoting extensively from the Bible but mostly using convincing personal anecdotes (after all, he is an elder with 90 years' worth of stories and wisdom). In his glowing foreword, Mike Wallace (of 60 Minutes fame) writes that Gordon Hinckley is an "optimistic leader of the Mormon Church who fully deserves the almost universal admiration that he gets." Clearly, Hinkley has struck a resounding chord with the American populace, including dyed-in-the-wool New York cynics such as Wallace. Word of this book is rapidly spreading across America as simple folk clamour to steer their lives and country with a more virtuous compass. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Gordon Hinckley lists the 10 virtues that he believes are critical to leading a happy, productive and contented life. In his 90th year, he uses his vast experience of life and its challenges to recommend remedies and antidotes which bring the promise of better days and good things to come. Hinckley is the 'star' witness in the case for optimisim. He sees a future for humanity which is bright and full of opportunity and that view of things is infectious. Hinckley so infuses the reader with his own brand of enthusiasm for living life to the full that the reader will 'want' to try harder at living better: at being a better person, a better neighbour, a better member of the human race. This book is a reflection of Gordon Hinckley's life-long commitment to Jesus Christ. It is Jesus Christ that is at the centre of this book. That being said, this book is enjoyable and instructive for readers of all faiths or none.
'Standing for Something' makes an impression that means it will be read and reread and passed along. I, for one, am glad I read it. I recommend it. One for the heart as well as the mind.
LDS or not, anyone who wants to see the world a better place for our children will stand up and cheer when they read this book.
Simply Outstanding.
As Mike Wallace stated "What happened was that my 60 minutes colleagues and I learned, from the time we spent with Gordon Hinckley and his wife, from his staff, and from other Mormons who talked to us, that this warm and thoughtful and decent and optimistic leader of the Mormon Church fully deserves the almost universal admiration that he gets."
This book richly rewards its reader! A must for anyone (Mormon or not) interested in creating a better world, learning to lead or simply enjoying life.
