When you have produced minor masterpieces like Trout Bum, Sex, Death & Fly Fishing and Another Lousy Day In Paradise, inevitably it must become progressively more difficult to match them but John Gierach has pulled it off again - just.

Standing In a River.. is not quite as pithy, humorous or philosphically perceptive as some of its predecessors and inevitably, for those who have read the earlier titles it is a little repetitive. Hence the four stars rather than five. The others are all five plus as far as I am concerned.

Having said that, I just love this man's books and I have re-read them over many times and never fail to be informed, amused or moved. Frequently all of these things. Standing In A River continues in this vein and several passages really struck home.

Anybody who can do this for me whilst using fly fishing as his medium, is a self confessed awkward son of a b.... and loves dogs and the blues has my vote every time.

A master of his craft - reminds me in a strange way of Arthur Ransome in his Rod and Line period.

Great stuff.

A nice title let down by the contents. It was a toss up between this book and Chris Yates. I have subsequently bought Chris Yates "Falling in again". John Gierach complains about the lack of unspoilt fishing spots - which gets tiring after a few chapters. I read it through - but it is probably only worth half the price. Short on humour.

John Gierach has done it again. This book isn't just about fishing-it's about life. Using fly fishing as his premise, the author shares his philosophy of life with his readers. Granted his answer to any and all of life's problems can be found while fishing. The bigger the problem, the longer you fish.

This book is laced with enough information to make you a first rate fly fisherman and to understand the every day business of life as well.

Glenn Wolf's pen and ink illustrations are simple yet exquisite.

Perfect gift for anyone remotely interested in fly fishing . . . it goes much further than your favorite fishing hole.
