Video Description

Two long out of print concert films of the 'Standards Trio' in Tokyo - 1985 and 1986 - make their first appearance on ECM as a specially priced 2-DVD set. The two Japanese shows - earliest filmed documents of the trio - have quite different characters. Volume I finds Keith Jarrett reaching into a down-home, country-and-gospel inflected mode on several tunes, especially his own piece "Rider" and the Arthur Herzog/Billie Holiday song "God Bless The Child". In these moments, the trio moves into a joyful zone that has qualities in common with Jarrett's playing in the Belonging band. Volume II features a particularly exquisite performance of an all-standards programme, with a transcendent "On Green Dolphin Street" and a version of Dizzy Gillespie's "Woody 'n' You" that embodies the best of bebop.

Both discs feature films directed by Kanami Kawachi and offer real insight into the interactive nature of the Standards Trio's playing. They give an intimate picture of a group whose fame has since driven it toward ever larger concert halls and festivals. The close-up camera work shows fingers and faces, technical brilliance, emotional expression, and puts the viewer at vantage point closer than the front row. We see as well as hear the rapid fire exchanges and the development of ideas, as well as the obvious delight that Jarrett, Peacock and DeJohnette share in this music.

Keith Jarrett - (piano), Gary Peacock - (double-bass), Jack DeJohnette - (drums)

Format:DVD
A fairly essential addition to any Keith Jarrett fans collection. If you are not a fan of going to the large concert halls and trying to get a glimpse of Mr Jarrett from row Z then this DVD is for you.Musically i can't add anything to the many reviews for the various standards albums that Jarrett has in his catalogue other than to say he is superb. As these concerts were recorded in 1986 they catch Jarrett at his very finest. As always, he manages to breathe new life into old tunes and make them sound fresh and invigorating. As you would expect from ECM,the sound quality is superb despite being recorded at a large concert venue, the picture quality,in the close ups is superb also. The only slight negative is the master/distance shots are not in particulalry sharp focus but it's such a minor point as virtually all other footage is in close up.It is obviously a proffessionally made film with overlapping shots as the soloists change emphasis and no shots of the camera men themselves either. The real joy though is to see the master himself at work - the facial contortions, the vocal harmonising, the unusual stance at the piano, the unorthodox way of changing chords and the odd hand movements make this a great study of a true artist deeply immersed in his work. With the running time well over three hours this really does give great value for money and praise to ECM for releasing such a great value package. An absoloute must for all fans of Keith jarrett and his art.
