In these strange times, how nice it is to hear these wonderful standards sung with style and utter, complete charm. With his gravel and scotch voice, Steve Tyrell brings us great music with what seems like such ease...he makes it feel so comfortable.
No small part of what makes this CD a total winner are the marvelous arrangements by Bob Mann (who also plays guitar on all the tracks), and the superb muscians. Jane Monheit is also a lovely touch in the duet "Baby, it's Cold Outside". It's as if Tyrell and the musicians are a unit, a cohesive, oh so pleasing whole.
Clark Terry on trumpet (and vocals on "What a Little Moonlight can Do"), Joe Sample on piano, Plas Johnson on sax, Alan Pasqua also on piano, and so many more, are all fabulous.
This is a delicious CD that gets better with each hearing...the first time I heard it, I merely liked it, by the third, I was 100% sold. It's got a cheerful spirit and a warm heart, and musical excellence throughout...and Steve Tyrell is a star...a bright and polished one that's been a long time coming.
