After 49 years collecting British coins at last a definitive guide to coin grades showing pictorial grades for EF, VF, F and Fair. A must for any serious collector.

I was involved in publishing this book (but not in writing it) and as a coin dealer for over 10 years even I need to sometimes re-tune my grading brain on certain coin types that I don't see every day. This book is excellent for that purpose. In my opinion it really should belong to every British coin collector's basic kit - the money saved on buying badly described coins will easily pay for the book very quickly. There is so much incredibly bad grading going on out there that any kind of pictorial reference and guide can only be a very good thing indeed.

Long overdue. Hopefully this book will help to reduce the many mistakes made in grading coins. The photos of each coin give a very clear image of grades with each grade shown. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in collecting British coins. Well worth buying.

Good value for money. Hard cover, handy size and a very good introduction to the grading of coins. Each picture is accompanied by a short brief stating what to look for in each grade of the coin. Reverses are covered just as much as the obverses. Should be read by those selling coins on Ebay.

Whilst much is written about how to grade coins, it is quite hard to find pictorial guides of this calibre.

Others have criticised the range of coins represented but there is a reasonable explanation in the introduction - sourcing examples of every coin would be impractical for the author but I suspect further editions will address this.

My only complaint is in the layout: sometimes you mentally match the grading label to the wrong picture as the line spacing is so even. Adding captions to the pictures themselves would have helped a great deal.

I find this guide so helpful. The descriptions or sample pictures elsewhere are not complete enough to give a good gauge on grading. I am now confident at grading coins even without the book. I can't believe I spent ten years collecting without this!!
Do bear in mind that some designs appeared on multiple denominations, so take this into account when the EF picture is a penny and the VF is a farthing. Also weak and strong areas of the design can vary across different specimen, even of the same denomination.

This guide is one of the most helpful coin books I have seen in a long while. While getting values is easy; getting a sensible handle on a coin's grade is not. This guide goes a long way towards correct grading - but I have yet to test it against an expert's opinion of a coin's grade!

This is very helpful in giving you the tools to be able to grade your own coins accurately.
It gives fine detail on the coins and pictures to give you an idea what to look for.
As long as you are honest about your own coins this is a very good guide to their true condition.
