I'm newbie to buying gold coins so my review is from that perspective

This book is incredibly comprehensive with over 700 pages of coins catalogued. Almost every concievable detail is provided including sizes, weights, mintage, finess, gold content and occassional 'Notes' which are useful and 'interesting!'. Each coin has a small black & white picture of both sides. As to be expected with a 'Catalogue' there is no narrative, it is a pure 'reference' guide.

Valuations are offered for the vast majority of coins (except for extremely rare and unusual coins) and are given in US Dollars based on a specific gold price. So for the UK reader, 2 calculations are required to get a current price in UK Pounds

I would have rated the book a 5 if there had been larger colour pictures (but given that they would all be gold would colour have helped? and given the large number of coins would I really want larger pictures?)

In summary: A superb catalogue of World Coins with incredible detail. A perfect 'reference' book. Highly recommended if you are buying or planning to buy coins. I can't immagine there to be a more definitive catalogue available.

The `Standard Catalog...' series of books are comprehensive in their listing and presentation of world coins/paper money; I can see how these volumes are invaluable to collectors. I am not a collector however and purchased the volumes on paper money simply to admire the artistry put into their creation. I was greatly disappointed (given my purpose) as the paper is of telephone book quality and all coin/note images inside are small, black & white and grany (the only colour printing is on the cover). Even as a reference for collectors, the presentation quality could be much better. For a beautifully illustrated guide to world coinage, I would instead recommend `The World Encyclopedia of Coins and Coin Collecting' by James Mackay.
