When her husband vanishes, Dominique Delahaye could crumble - or she could start to enjoy a whole new life... An unputdownable read from No. 1 bestselling author Sheila O'Flanagan.

Dominique ('Domino') lives a charmed existence as wife to one of Ireland's most successful businesssmen, Brendan Delahaye - until the day Brendan disappears, leaving his company in disarray and Domino and their daughter alone to face the music. STAND BY ME is the story of Domino's recovery and her journey from obliging and dependent wife to a stronger and happier woman, with a new man ready to step into the gap left by her deserting husband. And that's when Brendan comes home, handsome and charismatic as ever, expecting life to carry on just as it was before...

4.0 out of 5 stars Stand By Me 6 Sep 2010
By Leah Graham TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
When Dominique Delahaye marries Brendan Delahaye at the tender age of 19 whilst pregnant everyone says that it's only a shot-gun wedding and it won't last. Twenty years later and Brendan and Dominique are still going strong, along with daughter Kelly. They're the hottest couple in Cork, appearing in the magazines and newspapers frequently, as Brendan's building business hits fantastic and dizzy new heights and as Dominique frequents charity functions and becomes known as `Dazzling Domino'. Everything comes crashing down, though, the day that Brendan disappears without a trace, leaving Dominique and Kelly in the mire. Dominique moves up to Dublin and manages to get herself a job and a new life but finds herself unable to stop thinking and wondering about Brendan. But when Brendan returns, will Dominique be able to stand by her man?

The official synopsis for Stand By Me makes mention of Dominique's husband Brendan disappearing. However, that doesn't actually happen until well into the book - so far into the book that I was actually quite surprised when it eventually happened. The book is more about Dominique and Brendan's story as a couple. The book begins with a Prologue set at some point in the future, before taking us all the way back to 19-year-old Dominique when she first meets Brendan. Things move quickly between the pair and Dominique falls pregnant and then we follow their story as they marry, as Dominique has her daughter Kelly, and the years pass slowly but surely until we reach the present day. It was a surprising way for the story to be told - after all, I was expecting to jump right into the present day and for Brendan to disappear but it's not like that at all. Sheila builds the story from the beginning and tells it as it's meant to be told.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read 15 Oct 2010
By Amy
Format:Hardcover
Sheila O'Flanagan has a very nice and easy to read writing style which is shown wonderfully in 'Stand By Me.'

Unlike a lot of books, 'Stand By Me' starts at the very beginning of Dominque's and Brendan's story, detailing how they met, how they got together etc and carries on telling the story of their relationship over a number of years, which I personally really liked and which I think makes the book stand out from others.

The book is a rather lengthy read (nearly 500 pages) however, a number of characters are introduced throughout the book from family members to friends which help to keep the book alive and flowing nicely yet also takes a step back from just what is going on in Dominque's and Brendan's lives and allows us to ever so slightly delve into what is going on in some of the other character's minds.

I personally would have preferred to have read a little more about the earlier part of the couple's relationship as it interested me the most and there were big jumps in time on several occasions between each chapter which at times to me felt too big. Other than that it's a fairly good story which leaves you questioning and wondering what will happen next (particularly from the second half of the book). Like other reviewer's have said I think an epilogue would have rounded the story off nicely and would have been a nice end to the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars An entertaining read 2 Oct 2010
Format:Hardcover
Thank goodness Sheila O'Flanagan is back on form after the disappointment of her last novel. Unusually for this author, this book follows the main characters over 20+ years, from their early marriage, through the difficult early years to the time when they become known as the Dazzling Delahayes, social leaders and owners of a beautiful home. The heroine, Domino, is left devastated when her husband disappears and their lovely life falls apart. How she copes and is changed by the experience makes for an intriguing story. Great holiday reading or suitable for curling up on the soafa with as winter approaches.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stand By Me 21 Sep 2010

Dominique Delahaye is married to successful businessman Brendan. However, when Brendan disappears, leaving Dominique and their daughter to cope alone, things look very bleak for them. However, will Brendan ever return or is it too little too late in Dominique's eyes?

This is a pretty hefty book at a little over 500 pages long. However, normally I would settle straight into an O'Flanagan book but this one took me a little longer than usual. What I absolutely loved was the fact that this story is told from beginning to end. Although the start of the book sees Dominique in the current day, you are swiftly transported back to when she was just a young girl and met Brendan for the very first time.

Dominique is a very young girl and her parents are devout religious people who try to mould Dominique to be more like her brother who wants to be a priest. Dominique has other ideas and becomes very independent even from a young age. Sheila O'Flanagan does a fine job of creating the typical religious Irish upbringing that Dominique has and you almost feel yourself rooting for her to create her own life away from her parents.

Dominique's husband Brendan is introduced to the story very early on and we get to see how their relationship progresses and their family as well as Brendan's business grows. Before long you find yourself slap bang in the middle of Dominique's seemingly perfect life.

When Brendan disappears and leaves Domino (his pet name for Dominique) and their daughter Kelly to fend for themselves I found myself beginning to loathe the character. The story itself is wonderful in the sense that you get a real perspective of how their loves have become what they are and the reasons behind it.
