4.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable novel but it needs a sequal, 14 Mar 2000
There are few things wrong that I find with this Shadow on the crown series.

1)None of the Parlimentarian charachters like Gillingfeather or Butcherseem to yet all the Royalist ones do.

2)the two main charachters should be fighting on the other side with Sparrow seeming more at home as a Royalist instead as a Puritan in the Roundhead army.While Telling seems more of a Roundhead than a Cavalier.

3)In all the books every time these two fight Sparrow always wins so that it gets a bit predictable after awhile .

4)Scipio Porthcurn probaly the best charachter in the series needs more reading time since he seems to get only Chapter at the very most in each book. Apart from this the SHadow on the Crown series has been really enjoyable and am a big fan of Carters Novels hope he does another Shadow on the crown book soon.

A fantastic read. Nicholas Carter truly brings the period to life with all the intrigue and danger of the times. Yet another excellent yarn finding both William Sparrow and Hugo Telling battling for their lives on either side of the conflict tearing the country apart.

As a fellow reenactor of the English Civil War period myself, I could really appreciate how individuals on either side must have struggled to survive each conflict they were involved in, be it as soldier or civilian.

If you're looking for a fictional drama about the English Civil War, I really recommend the 'The Shadow On The Crown'!! 10/10
