I have been a die-hard Sylvester Stallone fan for some time now and i have seen many of his films, however i wanted to know more about him, and about his life, so i decided to get a biography. As this seemed like the best there was i went with this one and i was so excited as i waited for it to come. I can now say that it was well worth the wait and the small amount of money which it cost. It is by the far the best book i have ever read, and i'm not just saying that because i'm a Stallone fan, i really mean it.
The book goes into great detail about his poor background, his struggle for fame, and the making of those huge muscles which is what characterises the Stallone image. From there it goes into even greater detail about every single one of his films and there is also a lot about all of his wifes and his love life.
The author of this book deserves a big medal and also a huge chocolate cake for the great masterpiece that he has written for of us die-hard fans to enjoy. He has written loads of great biographies, and i personally will have no hesitation about reading some of those in the future, especially if they are as good as this one.
This book is a truly fantastic read and is a must-have for any Sylvester Stallone fans, or even if you just want to know more about the life of this great actor. A real treat!

This biography is certainly a must read for any Sylvester Stallone fan. I am a big fan of his movies and i wanted a to find a book that would give me more detail about the man behind the movies, this book gave me that information. It deals with his troubled up bringing and even explains the speech impediment that the star has had through out his career. The author talks in depth about stallone's work, be it the blockbuster classics that are 'Rocky' and 'Rambo' or the lesser known work like 'rhinestone' where sylvester plays a singing cab driver. It shows stallone going from living on the streets to living in a mansion in beverly hills. I felt this book got it right with its mix of his on screen life which was there for all to see and his off screen life, including past relationships. Most people will agree that the star of many movies spandind over decades still remains illusive in the eyes of the public.
This book is a must read whether or not you are a fan of sylvester stallone. The biography is easy to read and if you excuse the pun it really packs a punch.

I'd be lying if I said I was a Stallone fanatic, or even fan. However, increasingly I have admired a man who has the reached the dizzying heights of box-office legend without being able to fully annunciate. This admiration caused me to want to know about Sly's background more and more. What drives him? Was he born with a speech impediment? (Seemingly he wasn't.) Then I came across STALLONE: A ROCKY LIFE. Neither knowing previously about Stallone nor the author's other work, it is impossible for me to judge the accuracy of the author Frank Salleno's research and subsequent analysing. I did notice Salleno had written a few biographies all published within a year of each other, which worried me. (To fully know and research a subject surely takes much longer?) I also noted the book doesn't have an index, nor does it catalogue Sly's performances - which is frustrating, if not amateur. However, A ROCKY LIFE does appear to have been reasonably well researched and goes some way to unveiling the embryo that is Sylvester Stallone: superstar, Sylvester Stallone: man, in this well presented and easy-to-read book. Moreover, so many biographers set out to either castigate or lionise their subject (even Salleno, according to other book reviews) that A ROCKY LIFE, refreshingly, appears to do neither. Don't set this book in stone, but definitely a must read for any Stallone fan, or wannabee film star.

I read this book in about 3 days - a bit of a page turner if you're a fan, and reveals a human side to the actor that distances him from some of the fairytale and superhuman roles he has played.

However, I was frustrated by some glaring mistakes and inaccuracies. Some of these mistakes are woeful, for instance citing Mick (the trainer's) death in Rocky III as due to over-excitement because Rocky won the fight against Clubber Lang... a terrible error, since most readers would know that he died early on in the film due in part to stress as a result of Rocky's first loss to CL. There are other mistakes which made me wonder if the author had even seen some of these films.

The book also suffers because it was written in '98. Since then, the actor has released a number of other films, and he and the media have re-evaluated some of his earlier work, and so an update would be useful to offer a more modern perspective.

I enjoyed this book, there was a lot of background information into the man behind the movies. It doesn't pull any punches when it comes to dealing with his previous relationships and movie flops. Insightful, well written and an interesting read for fans of Sylvester Stallone.
