Review

Horseracing is big business and horseracing fiction is a serious proposition. Francome, of course, is arguably the best there is in the genre, or passing the finishing line neck and neck with Dick Francis. Here one Josh Swallow, champion jockey, plans to slip into retirement at the top of his profession by ending the season as champion jockey, but newcomer Ben O'Brien also has his eye on the title. As for Leo Leovell, once Swallow's trainer, he has switched sides and joined the O'Brien camp. And what Swallow doesn't know about is his number one fan, his stalker. Intrigue in the horseracing fraternity. The author is also a regular fixture on TV coverage of the races and isn't shy about self-promotion.

Product Description

Jockey Josh Swallow is about to retire and he’s aiming to go out at the top. He’s ridden over 1000 winners and landed all the big prizes in the sport - all except one. So he's determined that this season the title of champion jockey will finally be his. But it won’t be easy. There’s Ben O’Brien, the brilliant young Irish rider in his first full season who already has a lead on Josh in the championship race. And leading trainer Leo Lovall, once Josh’s best friend and now his most bitter enemy. There’s also someone else with a keen interest in Josh. She’s his biggest fan, though he has no idea she exists. And hers is the kind of obsession that will never be satisfied - not even by murder...

Ex-jockey Francome has been pulling away from the field with his recent thrillers and this is probably his best one to date. Every character has an edge and purpose that makes you care what happens to them, from Josh, the jockey who can never escape past scandals, to the trio of women who have a stake in his life. In particular there's Mouse, his personal stalker, who's in the process of turning his world upside down - though as yet he doesn't even know she exists. She's killed once in pursuit of Josh - who's going to be next? Add to this the best horse-racing action since Dick Francis retired (there's a gripping Grand National scene in here) and you've got a really top-notch racing thriller. It kept me thrilled anyway - highly recommended.

This is a horse racing mystery of the highest calibre containing all the excitement of the track, liberally sprinkled between a multi-dimensional thriller.

Josh Swallow is a top class jumps jockey coming to the end of his career. Before he retires he wants to achieve one more goal, to win the title of season’s champion jockey. To do this he has to beat the brash up and coming jockey from Ireland, Ben O’Brien, who is maintaining a lead of around 12 wins. It’s come down to an all out head to head battle.

Unknown to Josh and his girlfriend Susie, an unbalanced fan has developed an intense and incredibly unhealthy obsession for him. Known only as Mouse, the stalker is convinced that she and Josh are destined to live happily ever after together, just as soon as she can get rid of The Mistake, as she refers to Susie.

To add further tension to an already packed storyline, Josh is in the sights of one of racing’s prominent trainers. They had a falling out years ago after Josh had an affair with the trainer’s wife. Some recent events have fuelled the trainer’s anger to almost unbearable proportions causing him to begin to act irrationally, with Josh the focus of his anger.

With so many storylines running through the book, the pages just flew by for me as I found myself completely wrapped up in the race for the jockey’s championship, not to mention itching to find out what would happen off the track. It’s the kind of book that has me begging for more.

Some of Francome's books are very good. This was the first one I've read since Inside Track and he's continued in the same vein, excellent writing making you feel how he envisages you should about the characters.

I did feel some minor characters were a little one-dimensional although all the major characters were good.

The plotline is good, and doesn't feel at all like some of his previous stories which is typical of some authors who write a lot of books. I can't wait for his next book.
