1.0 out of 5 stars English how she is spoke 16 May 2014
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I wish I had read the reviews before purchasing this film. It is rubbish compared to the Excellent 'Enemy at the gates'. The worst thing about it are the subtitles, obviously written by a third-form student of English.
Somehow Kretschmann manages to keep a straight face when Kahn tells Masha, “I came here as a soldier. You made me a beast.” In this instance it sounds just as bad in German, though the English subtitles are full of incomprehensible lines or howlers, trying for period flavor with words like “Fritz” and “Heinie,” but then having an apologetic soldier say, “My bad.” Apparently, considerably improved English-language subtitles have already been prepared for the film’s future festival and awards screenings. Amazon should not have offered this version for sale.

What a refreshing change from the normal Hollywood drivel. Very realistic battle scenes, nice uniforms and a pretty decent plot. Gets a 5 star from me.

1.0 out of 5 stars Excellent film ruined by subtitles. 31 Mar 2014
Watched by chance at a friends due to raining so wet weather programme instead. One of 2 films watched. A superb war film in itself as a film but if this particular DVD' is the same quality as I watched its not worth buying. When Russian was spoken exceptionally large subtitles appeared (at times taking half the screen up) but were in the main meaningless as they meant nothing relative to the story. They cannot have been done by anyone who understood English. When German was spoken along with the English subtitles we had Russian dubbing. What the modern sequences in Japan at the beginning and end had to do with the film I have not a clue. A good film ruined.

3.0 out of 5 stars best to be seen in the cinema 31 Mar 2014
By robert
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Like all Russian films, it has got excellent attention to detail. However, unlike many Russian films, it relies on CGI, to create many of the special effects. The film is poorer, for using American techniques to create the scene. As the film was meant to be seen in 3D, its probably best to be seen in the Cinema. As well as these criticisms, the film does not have strong characters.
