Stakeout was funny when it was first released and after watching it again recently it is still highly entertaining if perhaps a bit dated now. The mis-matched cop buddy theme works well with the two leads (Estevez and Dreyfuss) bringing their own individual brands of comedy and gags together in a workable and likeable partnership. The story surrounds the two cops sent to stake out a former girlfriend (Madeline Stowe), of an escaped convict (Aiden Quinn), in the hope that he turns up there to retrieve the stolen money he has been hiding somewhere. Predictably Dreyfuss falls for Stowe and a whole barrage of tense, fun filled scenarios keep the film progressing toward the obvious climax.
Another Stakeout is predictably not as good as the first, the two leads continue to deliver the wise cracks and still manage to entertain. Rosie O' Donnell has been added to the cast but is more annoying than funny and her "pet dog causing mayhem routine" has all been done before. The good thing about this film is that it is obviously similar to the first but still manages (just), to keep the viewer entertained. As a box set this was a good purchase, I probably wouldn't have bought the sequel on its own.
