I have a new version and second hand of this model and both have been solid, stylish watches to own. I still have them.

They have screw down crowns, rotating bezels, smooth chunky bracelets and simple, but effective lumes.
These models (along with others) use the 5J22 Auto Relay design. Their minute hands move once for every 10 seconds of the second hand - a nice tough. But the selling point is that they will hibernate when not used for 3 days and then awake again if gently shook to show more or less the correct time. Depending on how long they've been asleep.

These designs aren't new and date back a few years at least, so that there is a good selection in the second hand market.

In my opinion, their quality, build and technology more than justifies their reputation once you've owned one.

My ones have never failed me, but it is important to wear them once in a while to keep the battery/capacitor charged.

Highly recommended and a model that will go down in Seiko history as one of the best they've ever made.

I Love It 9 Oct 2012
By NJP (Ohio) - Published on Amazon.com

I first bought this watch in 2000 at Lord & Taylor in Philadelphia and wore it every day till last month (Sep 2012) when it started acting up - seemed to not want to hold its charge, and would lose up to 30 seconds a day some days and would never get out of the 2-second low charge mode. I assumed the capacitor/ESU was going bad. It also could use a new crystal (very scratched up) which this model is prone to needing every few years due to the crystal material.

I had the crystal replaced about 5 years ago and it cost me around $150 at a jeweler (supposedly based on the pressure testing that Seiko did to ensure the 20bar rating) so I assumed that getting a crystal and ESU would be more than that now. So I was happy to see a brand new one here on Amazon (from DWC) for only $169 - much less than the $595 I paid 12 years ago.

So I bought this replacement, and it's running perfectly. And of course, out of the blue, the old one just started working again too... Guess it knew its time was short! (pun intended). I love the look and weight of this model so I'm very glad I was able to find this here on the Amazon Marketplace. Hopefully I'll get at least another 12 years out of this one.

Good watch/ Kinetic Auto Relay stopped working 11 Dec 2011
By RodM - Published on Amazon.com
I have had this watch for about 8 years. I really liked the fact that I could leave the watch alone for months at a time and with a shake it would come back to life, with the exception of the date. This is a great feature for someone that has more then one watch and does not wear it every day. Initially I paid about $650 at Macy's for this watch. Recently the auto kinetic feature stopped working. That is a real bummer since now I have to shake the watch for about 5 minutes to bring it back to life and have to reset the time and date. This is a good looking watch that I can wear with silver or gold since it has both colors in it. I would give it a 5/5 if the auto kinetic still worked.
It was my favorite watch, but I gave it to my son ... 28 July 2014

This is similar to a watch I purchased in 2000 in St. Thomas, VI. It was my favorite watch, but I gave it to my son when he graduated from HS. That was what he wanted, so it has taken me this long to get my watch back. What I like about the watch is that you can have it off for a week or two and put it back on and it will go to the correct date and time within a minute.

Just keeps going! 13 Feb 2014
By Ben Moore - Published on Amazon.com
I got this watch as a gift from my wife in 2001 and it is still going strong. I don't wear it every day any more, but the Auto Relay feature is still going strong, so long as it's worn from time to time to keep at least some charge. Actually, I liked this watch so much I purchased the same watch with the black face in 2003 or 2004 (it's still working as well).

As this watch is two tone (steel and gold) it definitely goes with almost any situation and can be dressed up or down without a thought. The crown screws tight for a water tight seal and the bezel is stiff but still easy enough to actuate if you want to. The Auto Relay feature is pretty slick. If the watch isn't moved for several days it will put itself into hibernation until it is shaken awake. Now, this feature is supposed to work even after several years of inactivity. This is hard to measure for two reasons. One, the amount of total charge in the watch almost certainly comes into play and over time, I would expect that the total amount of standby time is going to decrease slightly. When the watch wakes up it will set itself to the correct time (does not account for daylight savings), but it will not set the date. That you need to do manually.

This watch still looks great and draws compliments when I wear it. As my collection has grown, this doesn't come out as often as it should, but it's a great watch and I would definitely look to replace mine if anything were to happen to it.
