Book Description

10 July 2012 Shire Library
The best stained glass windows are masterpieces of colour and narrative. They tell Biblical and didactic tales, display images of saints and armorial crests, memorialise the dead and enhance the devotional ambience of England's churches and cathedrals. Roger Rosewell here traces the history of stained glass from the rare extant Anglo-Saxon works through to some major examples from the last fifty years, exploring the various styles and contexts and affording the reader fascinating insights into how medieval people 'saw' stained glass. Illustrated with a hundred breathtaking photographs and a helpful gazetteer of outstanding examples, this book is indispensable reading for anyone interested in church or art history.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stained Glass in a Nutshell 25 Aug 2012
Format:Paperback
Shire Publications have produced yet another winner in this gem of a book. Beautifully presented and copiously illustrated in colour, the book takes us on all-encompassing history of stained glass from early Anglo-Saxon times through to the present. In particular I liked the illustrations, averaging slightly more than one per page, so vital to the understanding of glass production. The book can be enjoyed both by experts and beginners, and, as an ex-teacher' I would have this in any school library.

5.0 out of 5 stars The little book that could. 9 Aug 2012
By nahani
Format:Paperback
`Stained Glass' manages to span the entire history of this luminous art form from its first appearance in the early Middle Ages to the end of the 20th century in under 100 pages. A beautifully and at times poetically written romp covering style, technique, material, reception, content, clients, artists, as well as haters and lovers of stained glass windows. Roger Rosewell leads the reader through this huge subject in a very entertaining and informative manner, and provides a useful check list of places to see, as well as a good bibliography for those who wish to delve deeper into the subject. Richly illustrated with excellent photographs, many of which are not `the usual suspects' one might find in other publications.
