With a growing collection of instruments I needed a second fiddle/mandolin stand so I could swap easily between fiddle and mandolin at gigs without the danger of someone putting a foot through a very expensive instrument. I already had a GigStand, which is built like a tank but is very heavy and costs more than I really wanted to pay for a second one just now.

Thinking there couldn't be much to go wrong with a violin stand I initially went for the cheapest available. This was a big mistake - see my review of the Karacha stand; whereas the GigStand is built like a tank, the Karacha is built like a crisp packet. Following the bears/porridge method the Stagg should turn out "just right", and I'm pleased to report that it does do the job very well.

In weight and robustness it falls between the GigStand and the Karacha. Light enough to carry around, but heavy enough to stay where it's put. The design, construction and finish are all very good. Most importantly it has a folding stay between the legs, preventing them closing up unexpectedly (unlike the Karacha). The pivots seem to be reasonably robust, though not as rugged as the GigStand. There is no problem with accommodating a violin complete with a bulky shoulder rest and anything likely to come into contact with the instrument has been protected with foam covering or a rubber bumper - with one very minor exception, which I'll come to in a moment.

Unlike the other two stands this one has a hinged plastic bar to prevent the instrument falling out of the stand. Definitely a Good Thing, although it's no big deal to slip a rubber band onto any stand not provided with this feature.

And now for the (very minor) niggles. The stem of the bow holder is a tad on the short size.

A violin is a beautiful instrument to look at and I have taken to keeping it on the stand at home as well as when I am out at practice or playing with the band. I bought the stand to provide safe storeage for my fiddle when I was out with the band and it does that job well. It is easy to unfold, firm and sturdy when set up, and the bow hanger saves a lot of eyes from being poked out between tunes.

This stand is great value for money. It's solid in construction with padding on the base and neck support. Not only works well for my violin but also my Crafter mandolin sits on it nicely too. Ideally I would have liked the legs to splay a little farther for better stability but for the money, it's very good. I'd recommend it to anyone.

Thus is a safe and sturdy stand. I didn't find any problem with the length of the bow stand as one reviewer remarks (you pull this out - it's true you have to pull it out towards its maximum extent to accomodate the bow off the floor, but I can't see that's problematic).

Buying one for my mandolin now!

We bought this stand as a Christmas present for our son. Someone suggested that keeping his violin on a stand (instead of in the case) would save a lot of procrastination and wear and tear on our nerves during practice sessions. I was a little dubious whether we would get something sturdy enough to stand up to the wear and tear of a heavy handed 10 year old for the money. However this stand is extremely sturdy. There is a bar which lowers down in front of the neck of the violin to keep it secure when on the stand. A rod with a hooked end extends upwards behind the violin for the bow to hang from. The rod extends just about high enough to hang a full sized bow on it but only just. This is really the only negative thing I would say - they could have made the bow stand a centimetre or two longer. We no longer spend the first 10 minutes of any practice session waiting for my son to get his violin out of the case. He can just pick it up and start playing. It's doing wonders for my husband's incipient ulcers already! If you want a sturdy, reasonably priced stand this is just the ticket and excellent value for money.
