With a slight personnel change to his band (ex-Sensational Alex Harvey Band member Ted McKenna replacing Rod de'Ath on drums, losing the keyboard talents of Lou Martin, but keeping trusty sidekick Gerry McAvoy on bass), the ten songs featured on 'Stage Struck' are culled from studio releases dating between 1975 and 1979, with 1978's 'Photo Finish' and 1979's 'Top Priority' providing the majority of tracks. Opening with the gutsy 'Shin Kicker', one of Rory's favourites, the song is followed by 'Wayward Child' which features Rory's guitar work at its blistering best. For the remaining songs, the pace rarely slows. The recording is supplemented mid-way with two bonus tracks not found on the original release, namely 'Bad Penny' and 'Keychain'. Concert favourites, amongst others, such as 'Moonchild' and 'Follow me', make way for the album's final two tracks; the superb 'The Last of the Independents' and 'Shadowplay'. Both songs again showcasing Rory's virtuoso rock style.
From what is an extremely solid, competent live delivery 'Stage Struck' is not without points of criticism. Perhaps because of a lack of variation in song style, with no trade mark slower blues numbers featured, a newcomer to Rory Gallagher may be forgiven in thinking that the Irish guitar hero lacks a more subtle side to his soloing - of course, fans know that this is certainly not the case, and there is still plenty of slide guitar. Additionally, and although much improved through re-mastering, the recording still has traces of the somewhat thinner sound that surrounded the 1980 original. Compared to Rory's earlier live outings the sound on 'Stage Struck' does lack a certain depth.
Nevertheless, the album remains a lasting testament to Rory Gallagher's mid to late 70s period and, without doubt, will please fans no end. As to introducing the guitarist's creative talents to a newcomer, 'Stage Struck' is perhaps best left until his two previous live recordings have been tried and tested. However, not withstanding this, 'Stage Struck' contains gems that both fans and the uninitiated will enjoy!
