Francis Reids new update of his stage lighting 'Bible',
By Paul Johnson (lowestoft, suffolk United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Stage Lighting Handbook (Stage and Costume) (Backstage) (Paperback)
There is a danger when books become so popular that edition after edition follows without actually improving the product. Francis Reid repeatedly avoids this error by ensuring that while being brought up to date, the vital facts are not altered. The Stage Lighting Handbook (6th edition) is a piece of essential reading for both newcomers to the subject and seasoned professionals who just have to have the latest Reid offering on the bookshelf for completeness. In this update, the latest items of equipment are discussed and the topic of automated lighting is given a thorough airing. Reid has resisted the temptation to remove some more 'elderly' parts of the book and has left them in as they are still as relevant today as they were in 1976 when the first edition was published. I tried very hard to find something that I did not like, or even agree with, but in the end simply sat and read the whole thing from cover to cover and I am not ashamed to say I still keep learning from this well presented and very readable book. If you have an interest in stage lighting - this is an compulsory purchase. Paul Johnson, Great Yarmouth College

The seminal work for learning the art of stage lighting.,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Stage Lighting Handbook (Stage & costume) (Paperback)
Whether you are only just beginning or have some experience of the practicalities of stage lighting then this is the most important book that you can buy. From the basics of the stage lamps themselves through to the latest microprocessor controlled lighting boards Reid describes their uses and drawbacks. Then, from lighting a stage with only one lamp right through to the standard lamp configuration for the large professional theatre Francis Reid guides the reader on a voyage of discovery, each new idea building on its predecessor. Packed with diagrams and photographs; a must for all within this field.

Out of Date,
By
This review is from: Stage Lighting Handbook 6ed (Paperback)
The book is OK for basics but it was last updated in 2001 so 10yrs out of date. It still talks about Strand as current equipment, no mention of LEDs and some of the regulations have changed so don't take it all as gospel.
