5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent mystery 16 Dec 2009
By Damaskcat HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover
This is the second in Christine Poulson's series featuring Cambridge academic Cassandra James. The books can be read in any order as they all stand alone. Cassandra is involved in a stage production of Mrs Henry Wood's 'East Lynne' during her maternity leave. A few days before the production opens the leading lady disappears leaving her husband literally holding their 6 month old baby, Agnes. Cassandra becomes increasingly worried about her friend Melissa's safety and there are definitely several odd things going on not least the strange phone calls she herself is receiving.

The sinister atmosphere is heightened by the fenland scenery in which the story is set. The book is well written and the theatre background is interesting. Cassandra makes a good narrator - well balanced and sensible though understandably concerned for her own small baby, Grace, and for her friend's daughter Agnes. The other cast members in the play are well drawn and intriguing characters in their own right. If you like your crime without too much violence and with a complex plot and some unexpected twists I would recommend this book. I loved it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Acting up 5 May 2008
Format:Hardcover
This is the second of a series of mysteries involving Cambridge academic, Professor Cassandra James who becomes involved with the production of East Lynne and, as the book blurb says, "soon discovers that there is as much drama behind the scenes as there is on stage."
As well as the mystery which Cassandra sets out to solve - the disappearance of the leading lady, Melissa - Cassandra learns just how difficult it is to be a working mother, coping with her 6 month old daughter, Grace. Cassandra's life is further complicated by the arrival of one of her ex-husbands (she's had two and she's only just pushing 40) and by the removal of her partner on work abroad at a time when Cassandra needs him most. How will she cope? Read it and find out. I recommend this book without reservation.

5.0 out of 5 stars fantastic English mystery in the Christie tradition 27 April 2005
By Harriet Klausner - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
While on maternity leave from Cambridge University and with her husband away handling a legal matter in Los Angeles, Professor Cassandra James meets her neighbor actress Melissa Meadows and her spouse Keith Kingleigh. Melissa and Cassandra share an affinity since both recently gave birth prematurely. Kevin is going to direct a production starring Melissa. He asks Cassandra to adapt the Victorian drama East Lynn, which she agrees to do.

As opening night beckons, Cassandra notices the cast seems extra nervous. Later an anxious Melissa calls Cassandra believing that someone is stalking her. Cassandra tries to calm her down. The next day Melissa fails to appear for a rehearsal so Cassandra goes to visit her. Melissa is gone without a word, but abandoned her six month old baby that she had shown so much love. With her own fussy infant at her side, Cassandra wonders what happened to her new friend while unable to contact Stephen, dealing with the abrupt arrival of her first husband, and Detective Sergeant Vickers suspecting the professor killed the actress.

STAGE FRIGHT, the second Professor James tale (see MURDER IS ACADEMIC), is a fabulous amateur sleuth mystery that builds up the suspense slowly so that the reader like the heroine suspects everyone's motives. Either foul play occurred or Melissa had played the role of a loving mother, but Cassandra cannot find a motive for either scenario while the evidence points towards her so that even the audience will believe she harmed or murdered the actress. This is a fantastic English mystery in the Christie tradition.
