Excellent resource for researchers, 17 Oct 2010
This review is from: The Staffordshire Encyclopaedia: A Secondary Source Index on the History of the Old County of Stafford, Celebrating Its Curiosities, Peculiarities and Legends (Paperback)
This book contains an amazing amount of material. I've researched local myths, legends and curiosities in the Cheshire, Derbyshire and Staffordshire area for decades and can say that this is the most thorough compilation of data for Staffordshire in this field you're ever likely to see. Being in encyclopaedia form it's terse and to the point: this is where you go for basic information, not for retellings of local legends, but it's because of this that so much material can be contained in it.
Equally important is the way every source the writer has used is cited in context: anyone who's read books on the subject will know the frustration felt on reading some snippet of information, but not being able to check it, or have any idea of its reliability. I admit that the price will be off-putting for many people (hence the four star rating), but if you're at all serious about the subject, it's a must.
