5.0 out of 5 stars best pencils 27 Nov 2013
By vella
I do not own this particular set, but I have bought them individually. Just wanted to say they are easily one the best pencils around. I had Derwent Rexel old pencils before, which were really great, now bought some FC9000 and some of these. Mars Lumograph comparing to FC are softer, better (smoother) coverage, FC seem to be waxy in comparison. Super pencils, recommend to everyone.

The pencils are of good quality but the lid does not stay shut when carried in a bag with other stuff; I have secured it with an elastic band.

4.0 out of 5 stars If you can find the "real" Staedtlers still made in Germany they are excellent. 31 Mar 2010
By Carl D. Antone - Published on Amazon.com
Problem is, like any mature market fragmented by captains of industry and their desire for profit, even Staedtler has been bought and sold. I believe Papermate or Rubbermaid owns them now. You can feel the palpable dedication to artists and designers fading at the while mention of those two conglomerates....

Without getting too negative, the German-made Lumographs are fantastic wood-cased pencils. The wood is fragrant cedar that sharpens in fine ribbons, and the lead is silky, smooth, grit-free, and doesn't break even at grades like 6, 7, 8b. The designer grades of F, H, H1, H4, etc. are equally impressive: they hold a fine edge and never feel gritty.

I still prefer the Staedtlers to Derwents, but nothing beats a Graf von-Faber Castell HB wood-cased pencil. I am stocking up on Tombows, too, because I don't think the Derwents are up to the quality they were 10 years ago, despite "being made of the finest Rexel Cumberland graphite on the planet."

Other fine pencils include the American Dixon and the Triconderoga, as well as the entire Czech-made line of Koh-I-Noor drafting wood-cased pencils.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best set of pencil 16 Oct 2012

There's not much to say about Staedtler's set of pencil except that this was my first set of pencil when I started picking up drawing again. I would definitely buy them again in individual pieces (no need to buy the whole set again after the initial purchase). The only thing is, the "B"s only goes up to 6B so that might be something to consider if you also prefer to go higher in depth such as 8B or even 9B. It also contains "H"s for drafting/light sketches. In majority of the drawings, the range in the set is all you'll ever need. It draws perfectly and feels right in the hands. The tin box that it comes in can come in handy for traveling but it seems like all manufacturers that offers a pencil set all comes in these protective casing anyways so this shouldn't be a deal breaker in any case.

So whether you're in the field of drafting or drawing, there's several pencils in the box that will fit your needs. The pencils that comes in the set are:
Drawing range - 6B, 5B, 4B, 3B, 2B, B,
Drafting or light sketches range - F, HB (mid), H, 2H, 3H, 4H.

I'd definitely recommend this if you're looking for the starter set to which you'll later on build upon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent! 7 May 2010
By John B. Goode - Published on Amazon.com
A very high quality pencil set. You've got everything from your 6B to 4H, great quality wood, even a metal case. They just don't make sets like this anymore. Sometimes you just want to use old fashioned wood pencils and it's hard to get a set with such a large range. There is another German brand, but that one costs a lot more. I highly recommend this.
