STAEDTLER's Digital Pen - an ingenious breakthrough in electronic writing. This revolutionary electronic ballpoint pen enables the digital capture of handwritten notes and drawings which can then be transferred directly to your computer for editing or further processing.
You simply attach the digital receiver to your notepad or writing surface and it allows you to capture up to 100 A4 pages of notes and/or sketches. These can then be downloaded to your computer via a USB cable and will appear on your screen in their original form. In other words, an exapt copy of whatever you wrote or drew.
With the advanced handwriting recognition software included, handwritten notes can be converted to text at the touch of a button and input directly to Word (or other Office packages). No more time-consuming retyping meeting notes.
Easy to use and convenient to carry, the new STAEDTLER digital pen will appeal to all age groups and users, but particularly students and professionals, such as architects and designers, secretaries and PA's.
Pen works in 'Online Mode' - Receiver is directly connected to a computer or laptop (via USB cable). Pen also works in 'Mobile Mode' - Receiver works remotely - does not need to be connected to a PC / laptop and notes can be uploaded later on. The received can store up to 100 A4 pages of notes / sketches.
The box contains the digital pen, receiver and USB cable in a metal presentation tin. The pen is supplied with two button batteries (SR41) which are required for the pen. Also includes three ballpoint pen refills (blue). 'NoteTaker' software is included which captures the handwritten notes and converts files into tiff image format. Also includes 'MyScript Studio Notes' software which is advanced handwriting recognition software. This converts handwritten notes into digital format for transfer directly into Word (or other Office packages).

When I started using this item yesterday I was orignally a bit disapointed with it. Couldnt get the text recognition to work well, the Note manager software kept losing the bottom portion of the screen when I went to convert the text to typed. Now, however after a bit of a play, im convinced.
The pen itself is of reasonable build quality and comes with replacement ink and a stylus attachment and the metal tin will offer the pen protection as it gets banged around in my brief case. Im not sure, but Im fairly confident that the pen, although branded is actually the same as those that are for sale cheaper. However, this pen comes with the full version of Myscript studio notes and not a lite version like some of the other models. When you ignore the note manager software and do your note capture and conversion solely in this software the pen works very well indeed. The software has multiple languages and you can set to decipher portions of text in various languages on the same page. I use this for creating vocab lists for language learning - the left hand side of the page is set to decipher czech, the right to decipher the english. So far so good.
You can train this software to your own particular writing style for better results and I have completed this task and the results from the conversion seem pretty damn good. Theres a few mistakes, but really I can see how the softare has made the mistakes because my handwriting is very bad. A particular word that my software gets wrong is "of", the way i write this with a curl below the line of the f makes it come out after decoding as the latter g. You can however set common mistakes to auto-replace with the correct words. This is also useful if you want to make brief notes and use some form of shorthand, you could get the software to put this back in to full words.
Another feature I like is the myscript notes software can search for words within your documents without having to convert it to typed text first, quite impressive really.
I have given this product 4 stars, would have been five if the receiver unit transmitted via bluetooth. Using in the on-line mode means that you need to plug the receiver in to the computers USB port, which leaves you with a trailing wire. Would have been fantastic if this was a wireless device. On the whole though, im impressed and highly recommend.

This digital pen is so easy to use and set up - took minutes. I started writing and my handwriting appeared on my laptop screen. At the click of a button, the software turns this into digital text and imports it straight into Word! Simple. My handwriting is not great and first time recognition was around 75% - but it learns and now I don't have to correct much. Saves hours after meetings.
I have also used it for saving sketches - I am a graphic designer and I can sketch a design with a client and download it to various electronic formats (such as jpeg) for the record. From sketch to Powerpoint in seconds - clients love it!

I never thought I'd be reviewing a digital pen other than the Dane-Elec ...until now.
I was lent the Staedtler digital pen and was so impressed that I bought one for myself, even though my Dane-Elec worked okay.
The Staedtler has to be the best digital pen I've ever used. The resolution of handwriting and drawings is excellent; it's hard to tell that the final document is not a flatbed scan of the written sheet.
Then, if you want to convert handwriting to text, it couldn't be easier ...or more accurate. The pen is easy to use, the software is easy to use and the results are impressive. I could drag out this review with more details of the pen's capabilities, but I want to keep this brief and to the point. If you want to know specifics just leave a question as a comment and I'll be glad to respond.
From a previous long term Dane-Elec fan I am totally converted. I would now only recommend the Staedtler Digital Pen - so much so that I've deleted my previous review of the Dane-Elec. The Staedtler does everything the Dane-Elec does but with more style, greater accuracy and added finesse.
This may not be the cheapest digital pen on the market, but it's definitely the best by a long way; and you don't have to buy specialist paper to use it. Just clip the sensor on to your note pad and get writing.
...oh, and one final note, I wrote this review with the Staedtler Digital Pen and only had to correct 10 words after conversion(well, I typed this last bit!). That's 95% accuracy - pretty impressive!
