4CDs devoted to the sorrowing mother, including the famous Pergolesi setting, besides music from the 16th-19th centuries. What initially drew me were the miniatures sung by the Monteverdi Choir - Cavalli, Gesualdo, Clemens non Papa.
I enjoyed Scimone's recording of the Pergolesi, alongside Corboz's of the Vivaldi Stabat Mater for contralto and orchestra. Haydn's sacred music is always good value but this is maybe a bit long, though nothing compared to the marathon setting by Dvorak (thankfully not included). Schubert's German version (c/o Klopstock) puts a different perspective, the Holy Family, Mary and John and Jesus himself, a more sentimental one on balance. You also get settings of the Offertorium and the Magnificat.
A valuable essay by R. Wigmore, texts and translations. A good purchase at the price, interesting for making comparisons, and not overlong. Maybe a rival label can do another box with some of the other settings that have come down to us (Part, Szymanowski).
