Product Description

Product Description

The Battle of the Bulge was the largest and most costly battle fought by the US Army in World War II. This work covers this battle, and includes new findings such as access to a US Army database, and providing unit data on a day-to-day basis. It also includes interviews conducted by US Army officers of key German officers between 1945 and 1947. It analyzes the fighting in the northern sector, covering the area around St Vith and the Elsenborn Ridge.

About the Author

Steven J. Zaloga was born in 1952, received his BA in history from Union College, and his MA from Columbia University. He has published numerous books and articles dealing with modern military technology, especially armoured vehicle development. His main area of interest is military affairs in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe in the Second World War, and he has also written extensively on American armoured forces.

First Sentence
Long overshadowed by the legendary defense of Bastogne, the battles around St Vith in the northern sector of the Ardennes front were the most decisive to the outcome of the German offensive of December 1944. Read the first page

I put off buying this book for about a year (I waited until the second installment was published to buy them together) as I thought that this publication would add little to my knowledge and understanding of the battle. How wrong I was. By focusing on this one northern section of the battle, Steven Zaloga actually puts the whole battle into much clearer focus than any other account I've read.

The problem with most other accounts on the battle is that Kampfgruppe Peiper and Bastogne get the lions share of the attention. Whilst this account does cover KG Peiper, it puts it with the context of all the other operations by 6th SS Panzer Army.In most accounts, the emphasis is on the collapse of US Army units in the earily days of the assault. Here, we get to understand and apprecaite the success that the US enjoyed against the bulk of the SS Panzer Divisions and why the 5th Panzer Army to the South was so much more successful in its breakthrough.

Quite simily, re-focusing anyway from those well known and well worked elements of the battle has made for an excellent book with something new to say on a familiar subject.

A very good Osprey book and a very good overview of the Bulge bar Bastogne.

By splitting the focus in two attention can be given to the northern shoulder and here I learned quite a few new things.

The focus of the German attack was in the north with two Panzer armies, the 5 Panzer Army and the 6 Panzer Army. It becomes crystal clear reading the book how hopeless the German cause was, the units, some of fearsome reputation were skeletons of their former selves, fleshed up with green recruits. Little fuel or ammo the attack could only be the dream of a mad man clutching straws.

The action is described down to company level and tells he story of the GI infantry man and Armoured Combat Commands facing off against their enemy.

It was a senseless slaughter as so many others in so many wars.

The story is told in a very direct and accessable manner and is easily among Zaloga's best titles in the series. I found that he clear description and over all view added to my understanding of events. I had even read a bit about the 82nd Airborne before and here to I found the book rather interesting since it puts the main events a little ahead of their involvement and even Monty comes out a little better.

Recommended all the way.

A concise overview of the battle of the bulge. The reader has to keep his wits about themselves as there are many facts and acronyms to assimilate. The double page maps are a great help and in certain cases could even be expanded.Ensure the reader has a good knowledge of the battle to begin with and these books will help in understanding what the author is telling us. There are onr or two minor discrepancies but the internet has so much information on this particular battle these discrepancies can soon be resolved. Another good publication from Osprey
