I have this recording, bought from a bargain bin in Tower Records New York some years ago. I suspect from Mr Jones's review that the recording offered here has not been 'enhanced' in any way. Every post-war cough from the audience comes through loud and clear. Occasionally the sound is muffled too. But, in spite of that - maybe even because of the imperfections - it is my favourite recording of this work by far. Every soloist is wonderful. Kathleen Ferrier shines through, but I would not single her out. All are beautiful. But beyond all this is the feeling that one is able to return to a sorrowful and still-suffering time in European history. Every member of the cast, and the majority of the audience, are probably dead and gone. But what a performance they leave behind! It's very very 'live', and I would not miss a cough, for each one sums up the circumstances in which the performance took place. Highly recommended. A spiritual experience.
