5.0 out of 5 stars I agree wholehartedly with Mr Jones 22 April 2011
Format:Audio CD
I have this recording, bought from a bargain bin in Tower Records New York some years ago. I suspect from Mr Jones's review that the recording offered here has not been 'enhanced' in any way. Every post-war cough from the audience comes through loud and clear. Occasionally the sound is muffled too. But, in spite of that - maybe even because of the imperfections - it is my favourite recording of this work by far. Every soloist is wonderful. Kathleen Ferrier shines through, but I would not single her out. All are beautiful. But beyond all this is the feeling that one is able to return to a sorrowful and still-suffering time in European history. Every member of the cast, and the majority of the audience, are probably dead and gone. But what a performance they leave behind! It's very very 'live', and I would not miss a cough, for each one sums up the circumstances in which the performance took place. Highly recommended. A spiritual experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars listen through and beyond the style 17 Mar 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Massive and operatic, often untidy, but with a cast on which dreams are made, this live recording of sixty years ago is definitely not for those who crave artistic and sonic purity. Rewarding performances of great works are perhaps best judged by the extent to which they reach the essential truths at the core of such works: all else is no more than a matter of style. Those who crave only what is the current fashion have much to lose, but those who are able to listen through and beyond the style have much to gain.

4.0 out of 5 stars beautiful music 24 May 2013
Format:MP3 Download|Verified Purchase
I would have given it five stars but for the single fact that I have never got to the end without falling asleep...the intro is truly wonderful but the whole lacks a certain sparkle that would have kept me awake (I think!)
