Product Description

Synopsis

The story of the inhabitants of St Kilda, and their final abandonment of their homes in 1930, is reminder of the fragility of small communities. St Kilda is now bereft of its indigenous population, but has become a centre for study of the natural world. This text reflects on these changes. The essays, written by distinguished historians and scientists, describe the history, buildings, archaeology, bird, animal and marine-life of St Kilda - exploring both the past and possible future. The book also features a collection of photographs.

St Kilda: The Continuing Story of the Islands is an interesting if incomplete collection of topics and opinions about the island group. There is hardly any mention in the text about geology, climate, land or marine flora or invertebrate fauna even though those resources were readily to hand. Harman (1997) has whole chapters devoted to geology and climate, Jewell, Milner, Morton Boyd (1974) has very detailed information of vegetation including a clear map of distribution.
The book is well written and interesting to read, the many drawings, diagrams, maps and photographs leaven the text and as a whole does stand-alone reasonably well away from and since the 1995 exhibition, St Kilda Explored.
The various essays by specialists are mostly interesting and good reading but the chapter on Soay Sheep delved a little too far into the scientific minutae. Weighted towards the human history, the editor's own interests are reflected a little too closely
