I purchased this 1972 product on the back of listening to Jack Nitzche's other brilliant shining, his soundtrack arrangements of Nic Roeg's excellent film, PERFORMANCE starring MICK JAGGER among others. (AMAZON purchasers are well-advised to check that rare item too.)

Of course, Nitzche has a proven track-record of producing beautifully-crafted music; akin, i should say, to PHIL SPECTOR'S wall-of-sound production trademark.

St. Giles Cripplegate is a church in London where this lp is recorded, with the LSO. According to the informative notes inside the cd, this church was chosen for its six second delay of sound.
There are no vocals, electric sounds or studio manipulation; St Giles Cripplegate is the recording of Nitzche's score for orchestra. There are moments where his nauseous "incidental" music for the film PERFORMANCE, is detected. However, there are no hallucination throb electronics to amplify the sound. Instead, the sweeping orchestration hints at Tippett & Copland.

This lp takes time to discern. It is a short lp in time, but lingers when taken with the wigged-out, Bosch-like artwork and the notes regarding the "order" of the tracks played.
As an original vinyl lp, side one, opens with track #6; track two is track #4. Now played on a cd player, one can program the order by the track titles (1st track, track #1 is actually track 5).

Puzzling, especially as the score takes on a different shape.

This is peculiar & curious as it is pleasing & special. Heaven knows what it is all about; PERFORMANCE is a clue.

St. Giles Cripplegate - Now this is classical music! 24 Aug. 2007

I have been a fan of St. Giles Cripplegate since the mid 70s and was only able to find 2 overplayed used LPs. I am grateful that it has finally been released on CD. Jack Nitzsche and the LSO did a phenomenal job on this one. If you like A Night on Bald Mountain (Zubin Mehta's version) you will love this music. Some of the music brings to mind Holst's The Planets and Mussorgsky's A Night on Bald Mountain. Soothing, tender, bombastic, eery - this one has it all!
A haunting classic 20 Jun. 2015

Probably the best work of a unique, little recognized talent.
