Extremely Readable and Informative 12 Dec 2011
By Quentin D. Stewart - Published on Amazon.com
McGuckin writes from an Eastern Orthodox perspective that holds that Leo the Great's tome has played far too great a role in how Chalcedon has been interpreted in the West. That is not the primary point of this highly readable and informative work on a pivotal church father, but it does make for interesting reading if one has exhausted the secondary sources coming from a western perspective. That said, Cyril's thought was extremely essential for the formation of what is now classic christological thought in both the East and the West and McGuckin does a fine job in outlining and detailing this great church father's theology of Christ in contradistinction to that of Nestorius. Even someone as great as Thomas Aquinas leaned towards Cyril in the formation of his own Christology as opposed to relying exclusively on that of Augustine. Cyril has probably been somewhat neglected by western theologians and so McGuckin has performed a real service here for those serious about theology, though one need not be in graduate school to appreciate the Alexandrian's vital christological contributions.

McGuckin a New Hero 5 Dec 2012

Virtually flawless in his grasp and assessment of Cyril's life and theological legacy, McGuckin is one of the most lucid scholars of Late Ancient Christianity on the landscape. Impeccable, extraordinary, seminal study.

Authentic Christology 22 Jan 2014
By Fr. Gregory Zaiens - Published on Amazon.com

John McGuckin is an excellent scholar, solid in his understanding of Christology and well versed in the writings of St. Cyril. He is able to put forward St. Cyril's teachings in the light of traditional Christian belief which is important when we see others twisting his writings to support their own tangents from the truth.
