The real thing 28 April 2010
Format:Paperback
I rarely read guidebooks from cover to cover but this one is written in such an informative and engaging manner that it draws you in completely. Written by someone who actually lives in the country it offers a wealth of useful information and interesting anecdotes. I have been to Sri Lanka several times and am captivated by the people and the country and it's therefore not surprising to find that this book is infused with obvious enthusiasm for both country and people. I consider this to be the best guide book on Sri Lanka and would not hesitate to recommend it to any traveller going to the land of serendipity.

Useless 14 Feb 2012

Format:Paperback
I bought the Bradt guide because the lonely planet and rough guide to Sri Lanka are so out of date but I had to return it to Amazon as its hopeless! It only lists 2-3 places to stay for each location and they are all hugely expensive ($100-500!!). There are hardly any budget accommodations listed. It also had nothing on whale watching (for which Sri Lanka is famous), a tiny section on diving which contained no useful information at all. Also, when i looked up the elephant orphanage in the index, it gave me a page number, but whilst browsing the book i came across much more info on the sanctuary on a totally different page - i never would have found this info otherwise!

Totally useless book - don't bother.

When it comes to the practicalities of travel in Sri Lanka, Roston Ellis' book leaves no stone unturned. We found it immensely helpful. There are also very good sections on the wildlife and on the cultural life of the island. Clearly, Mr Ellis uses to great effect his own local knowledge.

As always, the editing and publication values are very high. Bradt never disappoints.

For future editions, I might like to see a little more about the civil war and the current political situation. These are difficult subjects for visitors - but unavoidable. I recognise that for Mr Ellis to broach these issues might be difficult.
