From their sampler based deconstructions of drum and bass in the 90s to the continuing generative and improvised software based genre smashing that has characterised their more recent releases, Icarus have always carved their own distinctive, eclectic path through the world of electronic music, an approach that has seen them release a plethora of records on labels as diverse as The Leaf Label, ... 4.0 out of 5 stars bordering on the insane 2 Nov 2004
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Icarus sort-of lose the plot at about this point in time. Their tunes are starting to get too experimental and random, very hard to listen to, hard to follow, to keep up with. They manage to make some really decent tunes here which are just bordering on the insane; Oott, Sake, Ubik. The rest of the tracks cross the line into absolute madness.
If you are so inclined, this might be perfect for 7am post-club listening. If not, you may find it very disturbing.
The actual sounds involved, especially the drums and percussion, are surprisingly light, nothing too harsh or aggressive, but they have been sequenced in such a warped and manic way, whilst remaining 'in time' / 'in sync'.
Not for everyone - not even for most d+b fans. I love it though.

5.0 out of 5 stars eletro-accoustic jazz 4 Oct 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I think this record is a phenomenal achievment. It draws on a huge range of influences, from the rythmic patterns of jazz, drum and bass and batacuda to the tonal / harmonic structures of modern classical music, bebop and electronica whilst displaying a technical virtuosity in composition that is more akin to improvised music than computer sequenced music. The result is a set of tracks which are all very different and in very different ways leave you wandering why no-one had thought of it before. I have heard their music before and liked it, but this album for me shows their true form.
