Simplicity Itself, 22 Jan 2007
This review is from: Squeezebox 3 Wireless Network Music Player - Black (Electronics)
I can't praise the simplicity of this product highly enough. I quite enjoy the wrestle with configuration settings to get new gadgets working, but I was totally deprived of this experience with the Squeezebox! I run an Ubuntu Linux server, but was able to find customised packages of the Slimserver software with no problem at all. Install the software, let it catalogue your music collection, plug in the Squeezebox and off you go. The only configuration needed was to give the Squeezebox my Wireless Access Key.
I notice people are going nuts for the 'white' Squeezebox which is now hard to get. It's worth noting that all Squeezeboxes except the 'all black' have the same silver/black front and the colour refers only to the moulded back of the device. The Squeezebox looks absolutely fantastic in any colour!
The sound quality is excellent, but it does emphasise the poorer quality of MP3 files encoded at lower bit-rates. You might also need to do some work on the ID3 tags (track and artist info embedded in music files) as the system uses these to tell you what you're listening to. The menu system is highly intuitive, and a huge plus for me was the ability to use the AlienBBC plugin to access the BBC Radio Listen Again archives directly from the Squeezebox.
I couldn't help thinking that this was a rather expensive but fun gadget at first. Now it's an indispensible part of my home entertainment system.

Excellent streaming music solution - don't waste it on MP3, 17 Jan 2007
This review is from: Squeezebox 3 Wireless Network Music Player - Black (Electronics)
After a month of use, I'm very happy. Ease of use and perhaps more important, sound quality, are great.
Installing the Slimserver software and setting the Squeezebox up was no problem, but I'd recommend doing it next to the machine running Slimserver so you can see what's going on "end to end", before moving the Squeezebox next to a hifi. The menus were easy to follow and the only issue I had was allowing the Squeezebox through my firewall. There are plenty of set up examples on the Squeezebox FAQ, and most firewalls seems catered for.
It will take a while for Slimserver to build a catalogue of your music files, so worth downloading and running Slimserver ahead of the Squeezebox being delivered.
Streaming across Wifi works fine, no judder or pops, and the sound quality is very good.
I've used FLAC encryption for my music, rather than MP3 - IMHO Squeezebox would be wasted streaming MP3 to a decent hifi. I downloaded the AlienBBC add in, so now have access to live BBC radio and listen again feature, which is great. Finding and selecting music/ radio stations through the remote control is straightforward and all in all, its very easy to use.

Simply brilliant!, 2 Jan 2007
This review is from: Squeezebox 3 Wireless Network Music Player - Black (Electronics)
After looking at all options currently available to stream both Internet Radio as well as direct streaming from my computer, I choose to purchase Squeezebox 3 - Wireless.
1. Set up was simple and fast.
2. The physical appearance of the unit, including the clarity of the screen is simply fantastic.
3. Interfaces and menu's are intuitive and the learning curve is very fast.
4. Even though you are supposed to live in the USA to access the Pandora service, we did so anyway. One of the best things I have encountered. You enter in either a song or artist name and Pandora creates a 'station' for that artist.
5. Streaming audio quality for both music files on my computer or Internet radio is superb. I connected it to my Quad amps with B&W speakers and the result is amazing.
If there is one thing you buy in 2007, buy this. You will never turn on your TV again.
Paul.
