When I picked up this book it took me straight back to the 80s - unstructured pages of text and poorly-framed black and white photos of players with knobbly knees. But then I realized that the technique in it is bang up-to-date - in fact this is the _only_ book I have found which has the exact racket grip and strokes as taught in the current English squash coaching syllabus. No surprise there - since Pearson is the head honcho in English squash coaching. But those retro photos turned out to be exactly what I needed to know so as to coach people to that standard. Maybe it is annoying that it constantly repeats 'see notes for the forehand drive' but I think that can be useful to get a consistency of preparation and stroke delivery for all the shots.

So, although this may not stand out as a book for the beginner or club player, it certainly deserves space in every coach's squash bag. Like I say, the style does have a certain retro appeal for those of my generation now taking up coaching. And better getting modern technique in black-and-white than antique swings and advice tarted up with colour computer graphics.

liked the book. has sections of stroke technique, fitness, mental prep, etc. what i didn't like was the lack of detailed step-by-step diagrams or pictures explaining the verbage. photographs are quite poor and there are very few of them. same for diagrams. also, explanations are not very detailed. for example, after they explain the forehand stroke and move on to backhand stroke, the explanation goes like this: 'for the rest of the move, see forehand stroke above'. anyway, good try, but could have been better.

Coaching legend 7 Feb 2011

To Clarify the above persons review, the author of the book is actually right handed. the person on the cover is Paul Johnson, an ex-pro who was formally number 4 in the world, british champion and was coached by David Pearson. and everything in the squash game and swing converts pretty much for a right to left handed player anyway. Davis Pearson is one of the best squashes on the planet and any part of your game would benefit from having his input

Caution, 30 Jun 2009

Look at the cover page. The instructor is a LEFT handed person. All pictures in this book may confuse you at the beginning. It is not worth to spend time convert your mind, just buy a book from right handed instructor.
