More About the Author

Born in 1958 into a family of 9 children, I enjoy writing about many subjects from home improvement to gardening to religeous studies (I trained for the ministry). I have spent many years in the building trade, running my own business and so have extensive knowledge from that angle.

Hobbies include gardening, fly fishing and playing guitar. Still trying to get my head around this whole Kindle thing, but enjoying the journey !

Out of them all I suppose gardening has become my focus of late - even though growing vegetables in Scotland can be a a bit challenging, with sunshine in the United Kingdom tending to be in short supply!

My latest books on various gardening techniques from growing berries to composting to raised bed and square foot gardening, are a testament to my on-going battle with the elements to successfully grow vegetables that are on the main, suitable for northern (colder) climates.

Looking forward to this years harvest :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting ideas for growing in small spaces 1 April 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Having seen a few videos on you-tube, I was interested to read more of the theory. This book is an easy read and explains how this system for growing vegetables in small areas really works. It includes recipes for the growing medium. Especially useful for people looking to grow a range of vegetables where space is restricted.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to SFG! 23 Mar 2014
By Herbalist - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Before I purchased this book on Square Foot Gardening, I knew a little about the theory but was not sure about the rest of the details. Pleased to say that this ebook helped me to get a better grasp of the basics, as well as some handy tips on Companion Planting techniques that I can use even with my traditional vegetable patch - including good advice on Beneficial herbs and plants that you DO NOT want to grow together.

There are some handy diagrams/pictures that give some examples of how to plant out your SFG, or for that matter Raised Bed Garden, as well as a good chart with the numbers of vegetables you can grow in each square foot.

To be honest, some of the gardening information is fairly common knowledge to anyone who has grown veggies before - but that has to be expected I suppose when the author is trying to reach out to a broad market.

Growing vegetables organically has always appealed to me, and so the detailed sections on making good compost as well as organic 'tea' and how to control pests without chemicals was especially welcome.

All in all, I consider this an excellent introduction to SFG which has encouraged me to dig deeper into this concept.

5.0 out of 5 stars good book 14 Jun 2014

This year I decided to try all the different gardening tricks since all my kids have finally grown up and moved out. I have a lot more time to do the gardening.

This is a wonderful way to do a quick garden plot that is easily laid out. I used 5x4 foot which gave me 20 squares, which I used purple string and stapled it to the top of the box to make my 12x12 squares. I installed a trellis (made with 1/2 inch conduit, which I spent the money on the bender tool and I tell you, that was a great investment!,) YouTube has wonderful direction on how to use the bender tool, and then how to make a trellis using that conduit and also how to tie the nylon line.

I mixed up my own soil with the compost, peat, perlite, etc. Nice fluffy, I planted peas (against the trellis) carrots, bok choi, spinach, lettuce. It was very easy to grow, and then replant when the bounty of the square was eaten.

It is the hardest part of my gardening, since the other things I'm trying is the Dutch bucket system (you tube it, I already have tomatoes in 28 days) the rain gutter system (you tube) and the kratky hydroponic (YouTube).

The reason I say this is because it's so close to the ground, knees can't deal with that anymore. So next year I will probably build a couple of 3 foot off the ground raised beds, so I don't have to get down on my knees to weed.

The veggies were great, lettuce had to deal with the slugs as always but that's remedied with slug bait or beer.

So 5 stars from me, not going to ding for my bad knees, but it is a decent system for a small area.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Ensure maximum return on the minimal effort." 10 Jun 2014

Complete "How To" for a 4' x 4' (16 sq. ft) Square Foot Garden (SFG), sectioned into square foot areas complete with pictures to illustrate. Materials are listed along with the tools required for building your own and diagrams. NO guesswork here - it is written and described very plainly.

So now it is built, what soil do you need? This is vitally important and the author provides several 'recipe' mixes. You need 8 cubic feet of mix for every 6 inches of depth in your 4x4 SFG. If you want to make your own compost, read in this book what to put in and what not to put in.

The soil is in, now you need to know what to plant. Several pictorial examples are provided along with a chart of how many of each type will fit in each square foot. What goes well with what? A comprehensive list is given. There is also a list of 'bad' companions. How about growing some beneficial herbs and using organic pest control? You will learn it all in this book.

A comprehensive guide with pictures that is well-written. EXCELLENT!
